COLUMBUS, Ga. -- A Fort Benning soldier facing murder charges for the death of his 8-month-old son was indicted earlier this week by a Muscogee County grand jury, Superior Court records state.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer says that Shane Eric Hinkson, 28, faces charges of murder, aggravated assault and cruelty to children in connection with the Jan. 6 death of Alexander Cabanayan. Police say the death stemmed from injuries he received New Year’s Day while in Hinkson’s care.

Those injuries happened at Hinkson’s Antietam Drive apartment, police said. The boy’s mother found the child unresponsive and rushed him to the emergency room. He was in critical condition with severe brain injuries at the time.

Police said the infant’s injuries are consistent with shaken baby syndrome
