Richmond County authorities say they are searching for four motorcycles that were stolen from apartments off Perimeter Parkway Friday morning.

Investigator David Dutton said several men entered the St. Andrews apartment community between 2 and 4 a.m., broke the steering locks and drove away on the Suzuki GSXR motorcycles.

One of the men was caught on surveillance video as he broke the camera. He is described as white, about 6 feet tall, with a beard.

Dutton said the gate to the apartment complex was broken and had been left unsecured.

Sgt. James Kelly said group thefts of motorcycles are common. Kelly said the thieves will target areas such as apartment complexes, where they can move around without drawing attention.

Typically the thieves work by sticking a pipe under the wheel and loading the bike onto a truck or trailer.

In 2006 Kelly was a victim when someone took his and other motorcycles from his apartment complex. It was never found.

“They’re so easy to tear down and use for parts,” he said of motorcycles.

Investigators advise owners who cannot secure motorcycles in a garage to make sure they are parked in a well lighted area and are equipped with a motion alarm.

Anyone with information on today’s thefts is asked to call the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at (706)821-1020.

A question.

How do they know the thieves "broke the steering locks and drove away on the Suzuki GSXR motorcycles" ?

Maybe because there was video

Maybe there was video that showed the thieves on the bikes driving away with them, or possibly there was evidence of such at the scene.

Most people work hard for what they have! I hope they catch those responsible for this!

I know you can't use deadly

I know you can't use deadly force to protect property, but it wouldn't break my heart if these low-lifes caught some lead poisoning.
