Columbia County authorities on Thursday arrested one of two men they believe are connected to the shooting Monday of an Evans man.
Robert Donnell Hobbs, 19, of Old Evans Road in Martinez, was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and aggravated assault in the shooting of Julian Derrick Bell outside his home on Evans to Locks Road, said sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.
Still at large for the same incident is Joquel Tre’Shon Downs, 17, of Vandivere Road in Augusta, Morris said.
Bell told authorities he was playing basketball Monday evening at Wedgewood Park Apartments in Evans when he got into an argument with two men. Bell said he went home about 10:45 p.m., according to a sheriff’s office incident report.
After Bell parked at his house, he said, two men believed to be Hobbs and Downs approached him and fired a handgun into his car, according to the report.
Bell was shot twice in the left thigh and once in the abdomen. He was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he underwent surgery Tuesday morning and is recovering, Morris said.
Downs is considered armed and dangerous. He is black, 5-foot-8 and 130 pounds.
Anyone with information about Downs’ whereabouts is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (706) 541-2800.
