Robert Moody, the Augusta father charged with fatally wounding his son last week, is being treated for necrotizing fasciitis, which is believed to have been caused by bites he received during their altercation, a family member says.

Robert Moody was charged with killing his son, Rocky, last week.
Robert Moody was charged with killing his son, Rocky, last week.

He was scheduled Monday to undergo his third surgery related to the bite, according to his sister.

Moody suffered a heart attack Thursday, she said. On Friday, he made bond on the murder charge despite missing a hearing because of his hospitalization.

The hospital where Moody is being treated is not being
disclosed, at the family’s request.

The infection has gained national attention after it claimed the leg, hand and foot of Georgia graduate student Aimee Copeland, who is still battling for her life at Augusta’s Joseph M. Still Burn Center after cutting her leg during a May 1 accident.

Moody was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime after police were dispatched May 28 to his Red Bird Road home.

Officers said they found his 23-year-old son, Rocky Moody, dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.

An incident report indicated that an argument between the father and son escalated and turned physical.

After Robert Moody was assaulted, police said, he grabbed a .30-30 rifle and hid in the closet.

When Rocky Moody opened the closet door, his father fired the rifle once, hitting him in the chest.

Police are unsure how much time passed between the assault and the shooting, but authorities believe Rocky Moody left the residence and then returned.

An incident report indicated it was approximately 30 minutes between the initial argument and when Rocky Moody was pronounced dead.

Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser said the father was charged with murder because the investigation revealed he had enough time to seek help from authorities but chose not to call 911.

On Wednesday, Moody was taken to a hospital to be treated for an infection believed to come from several bites he received during the assault.

Most infections of that sort are fairly mild, but in anywhere from 9,000 to 11,500 cases a year, the bacteria get into the bloodstream through a sore or a cut and become invasive, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 6 to 7 percent of those cases, the infection attacks the lining of flesh and muscles and becomes necrotizing fasciitis, according to the CDC.

Though it can be treated with antibiotics, surgery to remove infected tissue sometimes becomes necessary.

About 25 percent of the cases are fatal, according to the CDC.

Not in Custody is Good!

Not costing the taxpayer. Murder seems a little strong for being bitten but I was not there and don't know the rest of the story.

raul, don't know if it can be justified as self defense because the shooting occurred several hours after the attack. Not enough details to really know what happened other than there was a fight, there was a shooting. Son is dead, father is (or was) in jail but now is in hospital from infection due to bites received during the fight.. Just a sad situation all around.

If he was hospitalized on

If he was hospitalized on Thursday and made bond on Friday, then his medical bill for Thursday would be paid by taxpayers.

Seriously! I'd rather my tax

Seriously! I'd rather my tax dollars go to pay for this man who evidently had a heart attack after he shot his son and was arrested, and having to deal with this infection caused by the bites he received from his son, than to pay for some lowlife, lazy behind, drug-dealing jerk or thief, who happens to get shot during an arrest. Wonder how much it cost us for the boy who was shot in the behind and was in the hospital several months?

Good Man had good job

Mr. Moody has a good job and I am sure he has his own health insurance. I don't know the rules as far as when you are locked up who pays but if a person has their own health insurance it seems like it would pay. Listen, we don't know what happened, maybe he was feed up and snapped, adult children who are out of control can really be hard for a parent to deal with. Whatever happened it is sad and his wife and other loved ones still have to deal with this tragedy. I am sure he is truly suffering over taking his own sons life. I am praying for them all.

I would say anytime a person has to resort to hiding in a closet, in his own home, he is justified to shoot whoever opens that closet door to do him wrong. When you are in someones house without an invitation, you are there for trouble and only trouble. And I also think Willow is correct.

Seems like the paper

Seems like the paper mentioned that there were issues in the past. That aside, I imagine this father is dealing with a lot of emotions and possibly this is what caused the heart attack. My prayer is for the family and ask God to comfort and give them strength to get through this.

Considering the background

Considering the background reported about the son, and the fact Moody was hiding in the closet to get away from him, I hope he walks.

I wonder

if Moody actually knew his nutso offspring had left the house. I can't imagine he would have huddled in the closet all that time if he had. If he didn't know the kid had left, then doesn't that make this a case of self-defense?

After all, he didn't go after his son looking to shoot him, but was trying to protect his own sef'.

Guess I didn't read the article carefully or it was update after I read the initial article. Wasn't aware that he had to hide in the closet but Fiax, then I would say it possibly could have been self defense.

Family Needs Prayers

The bottom line is this family needs prayers at this difficult time. Domestic violence is one of the most unpredictable situations, and it causes a lot of stress for all involved. This kid must have mixed up with the wrong crowd and obviously had no respect for his parents for whatever reason. I pray the family finds peace down the road.

What's the point of seeking

What's the point of seeking help from the police if 99.9% of the time they don't even make an arrest. I've seen it happen REPEATEDLY in Richmond County.

Since we are speculating

There is a possibility that Mr Moody hid in the closet with the rifle after the assault and was laying in wait for his son to open the door and shoot him. Whatever happened, I'm sure the courts will sort this out as to what took place.
As a father, taking your own son's life has to weigh heavily on him.

Jury already picked

If this goes to trial perhaps most of the people who posted here will be able to serve; the trial could last only a matter of hours because most of you already know what happened, already know the good and bad of the family, and have already decided what should happen. So much for a fair and impartial jury.

self defense for sure

As a friend an coworker of robert, I know all the details. The kid attacked him a few weeks ago with a brick. And also treatened his mom who threatened him with an iron skillet. Robert is truly is in ICU on a ventilator for bites suffered from his son that day. He had a heart attack the night prior before being admitted for infection of the bites. He is in great health danger and all due to this attack. Simllar to the man who ate a man's face off in Miami and another who ate his roommates heart and brain in another news citation. Bath salts? look it up. needs to be made illegal in all states. Pray for Robert now, son is at peace. Robert is a good man just always gave in for his kids too much.. thats his crime and now in serious health condition. this has been ongoing abuse by his son for YEARS. pray for Robert now, he had had enough.
