A man is in jail in connection with a series of stolen catalytic converters from area church vehicles after Richmond County sheriff’s deputies caught him in the act.

Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, deputies were called to Second Mount Moriah Baptist Church on the 1400 block of Brown Street after a caller reported seeing a suspicious man under the church’s van, sheriff’s investigator Kendall Brown said in an e-mail.

When the deputies arrived, they found Lee Anthony Holmes, 32, of North Augusta, underneath the van trying to cut the catalytic converter off using a battery powered saw. He was arrested and charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing.

Brown said the sheriff’s office connected him to catalytic converter thefts from transport vans at several area churches, including First New Hope Baptist on White Road, Crawford Avenue Baptist Church, New Destiny Triumph Church on Wrightsboro Road and Children Unique Christian Daycare Center, also on Wrightsboro Road.

The total damage was valued at more than $3,000.

In addition to the original trespass charge, Holmes faces five separate felony counts of criminal damage to property, Brown said.

Lack of Respect & Enabling Mentality

So many lack personal respect & acountibility and belive they are "owed" something in life. Our society as a whole needs to change for the better.

GREAT JOB RCSO and the caller!!

Thanks RCSO

As pastor of Crawford Avenue Baptist Church we are thankful for all those who helped capture this man. This man caused damage to 3 of our vans. we drive about in the community every week picking up children to bring to activities at the church like Awana's and VBS. We also were planning on using the vans for our youth camp this year. Now we have to find money to replace the damage because of what this man did. Do we forgive? Yes, but there are still consequences for our actions. This man was thinking about his drug habit or whatever and certainly not the many people he was affecting by his actions. We are grateful that maybe he is jail for a while so that he can leave our stuff alone. Thanks to the person who thought enough to call the police and for the RCSO doing what needed to be done.

Thanks Preacherman

Thanks for providing all of the additional opportunities for our youth to through programs during the summer. Hopefully, this will help them to be better individuals now and later in life. If the message gets through, I know they will be far better off now and eternally.

Hats off to all the citizens

Hats off to all the citizens that want the best for our community and report suspicious activities!!! With a lot of people caring and reporting what they see - maybe we can make a huge dent into all the criminal activities! God bless the Preacherman and his flock for looking out and helping our children.

Straight to Hell

I kinda think if you steal from a church, you may go straight to Hell. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Stealing is lowlife enough but stealing from a Church????
