A 77-year-old Augusta man is in custody after he fired a shotgun at a garbage truck Wednesday.

According to an incident report, Sylvester Wilkerson Jr., 69, of Kelly Street, was driving the Barry Smith Sanitation truck near Forsyth Street about 10:45 a.m. when he noticed a small brown car following him.

The vehicle’s driver, Clinton Edwards, of Telfair Street, then fired a single shot into the garbage truck’s driver side door with a shotgun, according to the report.

Wilkerson flagged down a nearby officer for help.

Police said the shooting stemmed from a debt Wilkerson owed to the suspect.

Edwards was booked into the Richmond County jail on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
