Richmond County sheriff’s officials said a son’s assault on his father Monday led to a homicide that afternoon.
Authorities were dispatched to the 1000 block of Red Bird Road around 5:40 p.m. for a domestic dispute. They found the body of 23-year-old Rocky Moody, dead from a gunshot wound.
His father, Robert Moody, 55, was booked into the Richmond County jail on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser said the father and son had a history of problems. Deputies told investigators they were familiar with the family and had responded to the home in the past when the son assaulted his father.
Police records indicate the last call to the home was in 2009. Before, that there was about one call a year for several years.
Dresser said another incident occurred several hours before the Memorial Day shooting.
Investigators would not disclose how the son assaulted his father. Hours later, police said, the father shot his son in the chest with a rifle.
In the past six years, Rocky Moody had been arrested at least five times, starting with a charge of theft by taking in August 2006.
His arrests included disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, possession of controlled substances and family violence battery.
This is the 13th homicide in Richmond County this year.
