He was identified as Elliott Bernard Anthony, 52. According to a family member, Anthony was homeless, Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said in an e-mail.

Authorities were alerted after pedestrians in the area discovered Anthony’s body around 10:30 a.m.

He was facedown in water a few feet deep when officers from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office arrived.

Lt. Blaise Dresser said there are no obvious signs of trauma.

“There are signs he
received treatment at a local hospital in the last 24 hours,” Dresser said.

Authorities said they are investigating the circumstances of his hospital
stay.

The body has been taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for an autopsy today.

It's a good thing they got the body over to the lab before Friday afternoon.

People don't have a choice as

People don't have a choice as to whether or not a body gets taken to the Crime Lab. My guess is that the cooler at the lab malfunctioned and nobody knew it.

@corgimom

That may be true but in my opinion there is no way they did not know that body was in that condition before it was sent to the funeral and no one warned the funeral home of the state of the body. To me that shows intent to cover up, maybe let the funeral home take the blame.

Sad situation

Poor soul - being found in the canal - what may be the reason for him to have been found there? Homeless - a human being. May he rest in peace.
