The son of a Hephzibah commissioner and former state senate hopeful was arrested Tuesday on cocaine trafficking charges.

According to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office incident report, John W. Buchwitz, 20, sold 10.3 grams of powder cocaine for $650 to a police informant Monday in the parking lot of Walmart at 3209 Deans Bridge Road.

The next day, according to the report, an informant set up another meeting with Buchwitz via text message in the same parking lot.

When Buchwitz arrived around 8 p.m., deputies surrounded his Ford Excursion and found about 59.6 grams of cocaine on him. He was arrested and is currently in the Richmond County jail, charged with the sale of cocaine and cocaine trafficking.

Buchwitz is the son of longtime Hephzibah commission chairman Robert Buchwitz, who this year filed a notice of intent to seek the Senate District 23 seat held by Sen. Jesse Stone, R-Waynesboro.

Buchwitz quit the campaign a few weeks ago, however, and is in the process of returning campaign donations, his campaign manager Brent Weir said.

Don't Hate

Remember this was the son, not the father. We may all have family members, who at one time or another, who do things we are not proud of. If the Commissioner is a good man then what his son did should not tarnish his good works. Remember Lucifer was also one of God's Angels but that did not make God bad.

I agree. The father stands on

I agree. The father stands on his own record, not that of son. Just as the son doesn't stand on the record of the father.

Don't worry. There are a lot

Don't worry. There are a lot of active or retired professionals (lawyers, educators, etc.) in the CSRA with criminal adult children in local and state prison that haven't been tainted a bit by their off-springs criminal records, as a matter-of-fact, it is rarely even newsworthy.

20 and already a drug dealer,

20 and already a drug dealer, he has really started his adult life out on a positive note. Hopefully getting caught now will save him from a future that will go nowhere.

1st of all I do agree with

1st of all I do agree with the posters on this story. This is not Mr. Buchwitz's doing and he is not responsible for the actions of his adult son.

Now as a longtime reader and poster here it does amaze me how this sentiment seems to apply to white Republicans by the majority of posters, but let the perp be the child of a Democrat, black or white, and all of a sudden "Apple don't fall far from the tree" becomes the operative adage of the day.

Two cases come to mind immediatley and I'll bet with a little more research there are others. Dr Charles Lark and Champ Walker.

I don't know that the elder

I don't know that the elder Mr. Buchwitz has ever been convicted of multiple felonies as has Mr. Walker.... And I don't recall people in general hanging the sins of junior Larke on senior either. There may have been a few, but they are the usual suspects when it comes to tunnel vision.
