    A Columbia County woman and her son, accused of killing a neighbor in 2009, appear to be ready to plead guilty at a sentencing hearing today in Evans.

    Rebecca Bowers Sears, 44, and Christopher Sean Bowers, 23, are charged with murder in connection to the beating death of Laverne “Kay” Parsons.

    Sears and Bowers were listed as an addendum to the Friday sentencing calendar for Superior Court Judge Sheryl B. Jolly. The hearing is set to start at 9 a.m. in the Evans courthouse.

    On March 25, 2009, Parsons was found in her garage beaten to death with a bat and a claw hammer. Sears and Bowers were arrested a few days later. They were indicted on murder, armed robbery and burglary charges in April 2010.

    Sears reportedly was having an affair with Parson’s husband and orchestrated the killing to eliminate her romantic rival, authorities have said.

    District Attorney Ashley Wright intended to seek the death penalty. Wright said Thursday she can’t discuss a pending case.

    Sears’ death-penalty trial was tentatively set in October for last month; at that hearing, her lead defense attorney, Newell Hamilton, said he had no more pretrial motions to file. Other issues, he said, could cause delays.

    Mug Shots Rebecca Sears

    Check out the 2009 mug shot of Rebecca Sears on channel 26 website and the current one on channel 12. Doesn't look like the same person. Guess that's what prison food does for you. She will have 40 more years to eat that swill w/ white bread at taxpayers expense. Yep, this was a sure shot for the death penalty.

    If this case didn't warrant the death penalty, what does? Beat to death with a claw hammer, good grief. Yep Raul, she'll keep bellying up to the taxpayer's trough for another 40 years.

    @soapy/augustacitizen. Agree. There is no reason to have a death penalty if it isn't applied when appropriate. This case met the standard.In any event, the way she is going, she may eat herself to death thereby negating the need for the death penalty.

    Amen, Raul. Allowing them to die virtually painlessly via lethal injection is way too good for them. To feed, clothe, and medically provide for them with tax payers dollars is absurd!

    how could a mother...

    She must be the next thing to an animal...to persuade her then 19 or 20 year old son to help her with this monstrous act...she has her son's blood on her hands, too. A child, whether adult or not, should be able to count on their parents to direct them, not destroy them. She has masterminded the destruction of so many lives...there are no words for this.

    Sad

    Sad to say but the courts have failed on this one. They both should have been given the death penalty. They beat her to death! Left her son without a mother. Sad day when justice isn't served to those who have done such terrible crimes.

    I agree with Ashleyn1. They should not be able to escape the death penalty for this unspeakable crime on this mother, daughter, sister and friend. I do not count her as wife, because her husband's betrayal robbed her of the protection of her marriage. I also regret that he appears to be escaping any legal consequences for the events and spoken words that lead to her brutal murder. Sears would never have been able to conceal the extent of her wrath and rage towards Kay to him. God will have justice with him. May Kay rest in peace with our Lord and her son have healthy love from an extended family and community.

    Premeditated AND/OR criminal homicide

    Either one of these will get you the needle. And these two committed both of them. Article says "..........intended to seek the death penalty". Intended to, but not now...I guess the two murderers admitted to what they did. That only takes the heat off of the prosecution to prove the murder(which by all accounts would have been easy to do), so now these two will be the taxpayers burden!! I am truly sorry Kay and family....................
