Mother testifies at son's child porn trial

The second day of a child pornography trial Thursday included the testimony of Sue Birchfield, who confronted her son, Michael Birchfield, over what she said was an addiction.

Sue Birchfield said she encountered bookmarked porn sites on her home computer, but never came across the child pornography that landed her son in jail last summer, charged with 30 counts of exploitation of a minor.

“I spoke to him on several occasions about his addiction,” Birchfield said.

Michael Birchfield was arrested June 22, 2011 after investigators said his cell phone was found outside the Corner Store in Harrisburg. On the phone were numerous images of child pornography and investigators later found more pictures on the home computer, according to Assistant District Attorney John O’ Neal.

In court Thursday, Sue Birchfield acknowledged that her son had a cell phone on her wireless plan, but didn’t recognize the phone discovered outside the store as her son’s. In a recorded phone conversation between an incarcerated Birchfield and his mother, Sue Birchfield said the phone belonged to her son.

“On that day you were certain it was Michael’s phone,” O’ Neal said. Sue Birchfield only responded by dabbing at her eyes.

“This is not a comfortable situation for anyone, but I do have to search for the truth in this case,” O’Neal said.
