A man was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds Thursday night.

Richmond County deputies responded to the 1300 block of 12th Street at 9:21 p.m. The unidentified victim was “conscious and alert” when taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Investigator Rick Chase said.

In the early stages of the investigation, police think gunfire started at a laundromat next to Smith Automotive, 1325 12th St. It appeared the victim knocked on the door of a house on Perry Avenue, from where 911 was called, Chase said.

No witnesses or suspects were at the scene when police arrived.
