A 4-year-old girl has died after being abused by her father last week, police said.

Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser said the child was taken off life support Saturday. Her father, Willie Clifford Jones, 22, was jailed March 11 on a charge of first-degree cruelty to children. Dresser said a murder charge will be added Monday.

Investigators were called to Doctors Hospital, where the girl had been brought around 9 p.m. March 11 after she became unresponsive in her father’s home in the 2900 block of Gordon Highway. The child was transported to Medical College of Georgia Hospital with bleeding in the brain.

Police said Jones had been caring for the child during the past month while her grandmother, with whom the girl lived, was having surgery.

Details have not been released on the object used to beat the child.
