Augusta man charged in October slaying

An Augusta man was arrested Friday morning on murder charges stemming from an Oct. 12 shooting.

Derek Alexander Johnson, 25, has been booked into the Richmond County Jail on charges of murder, possession of a firearm during a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Deputies were called to Portsmouth Place on Oct. 12 after gunshots were heard in the area. Later they discovered the body of Kevin Jamel Evans, 21,in the backyard of an elderly couple’s home. Investigators said he had been fatally shot in the side.

Johnson was named as a suspect immediately after the shooting.
