The man stole the money box from the table where the girls were selling cookies at 5:45 p.m. Sunday outside Walmart on Whiskey Road, according to an Aiken Public Safety incident report.
He fled through the back of the store, losing his white hat and brown jacket on the way. It was a University of Georgia hat with “Cook” embroidered on the side, an incident report says.
The man had approached as though he were going to buy cookies but instead snatched the box and ran, said Katie Miller, the troop leader and service unit cookie manager.
Adults around the table described the thief as black, 18-22 years old, 5 feet 10 inches and 165 pounds, and said his underwear was visible above his pants, she said.
Two teenage girls, working for Troops 5140 and 5225, were shaken.
Miller said the girls will not have to repay the money, but because the Girl Scouts of South Carolina-Mountains to Midlands will foot the bill, the girls will end up paying.
“They will lose out on programming,” she said.
Cookie money goes toward trips, activities to earn badges and service programs.
A similar incident occurred Saturday in Houston, according to media reports. The Girl Scouts ended up chasing the robber and latching on to his car. No one was hurt.
