Columbia County authorities have now arrested two men in connection to last week’s fatal shooting in Evans.

Benjamin McKie Jr., 46, of the 3600 block of Meadowgrove Drive in Augusta, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and giving false statements. Reggie Demond Bennett, 27, of 627 Blanchard Road in Evans, was charged with giving false statements, said sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

Both men are being held at the Columbia County Detention Center.

No bond was set for McKie, but Bennett’s bond was set at $10,000, Morris said. Both were arrested Wednesday.

The shooting occurred Friday at Bennett’s home.

Patrick Smith, 33, died Saturday at Medical College of Georgia Hospital from a gunshot wound to the abdomen and pelvis, Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins said Monday.

Philip Marshall, 44, a resident at the home, was shot in the back during the same incident, but survived, Morris said.

On Friday, Smith was found passed out in the driver’s seat of a GMC Suburban on the side of Blanchard Road. An unloaded 9 mm handgun was found on the passenger seat of the SUV.

Morris said Wednesday that another gun also was recovered at the scene.

A fight between Smith and Marshall lead to the shooting, Morris said, but further details on what started the altercation have not been released. Marshall has not been charged in the shooting.
