Judge Isaac "Buddy" Jolles has been probate judge since 1998. He resigned this week, 10 months before his term expires.

Jolles had announced that he would not seek re-election but sent a memo Wednesday to Gov. Nathan Deal and Augusta City Administrator Fred Russell tendering his resignation.

“I would like to thank my family who has made many sacrifices during my years in office,” said Jolles, who was elected to preside over family court 13 years ago.

Now, let's make the assumption that Judge Jolles is in good health. If that assumption is true, we have here another example of a practice that I do not like — namely, a judge stepping down a few months early in order to get the governor to name a replacement. That way, when the election comes in November, the appointee can have the famous (I) put beside his name on the ballot, thus all but assuring that the governor's appointee wins the election.

It is very rare to actually have a contest in judicial elections.

This retirement is 100%

This retirement is 100% health related.

Per state law, Senior St. Court Judge Richard Slaby will pull double duty as Probate until the election (less than a year away)...

Slaby is as solid as they come, and on the "judicial flow chart" in Augusta, Probate is a step down from state court...

No shenanigans here.
