Police search for suspect who fled from emergency room

Samuel Blackwell

Police are looking for an Augusta man who fled from a hospital emergency room after he was arrested and charged with fleeing police in an afternoon chase, authorities said.

Samuel Blackwell, 53, of Abby Way, was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital by ambulance after his arrest Wednesday, according to Trooper 1st Class Amelio Lamkin with the Georgia State Patrol. Blackwell appeared to be in some kind of medical distress and told officers that he had diabetes and had taken methamphetamine, Lamkin said.

He disappeared from the hospital some time between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., he said.

Blackwell was arrested after a police officer attempted to stop a Chevrolet Cavalier near the intersection of Roy and Wheeler roads driven by 19-year-old Destiny Dore, Lamkin said.

Dore tried to elude the officer, initiating a 15-minute chase that ended near Blackwell’s home on Abby Way. During the chase, Dore and Blackwell managed to swap positions, allowing Blackwell to take over as driver, Lamkin said.

Blackwell crashed the Cavalier behind a house and was apprehended along with Dore. Both are charged with fleeing and attempting to elude police, reckless driving and several other traffic violations, police said. Blackwell also is wanted in Columbia County on a felony theft charge, Lamkin said. Dore is being held at the Richmond County Jail.
