A teenager accused of shooting a rival in the arm received a sentence of 10 years in prison Wednesday in exchange for a guilty plea to criminal attempt to commit murder.
Anthony Werthen, 16, must also serve five years’ probation under the sentence imposed by Superior Court Judge Carlisle Overstreet.
Assistant District Attorney Rex Myers said that Werthen went to the 17-year-old victim’s house with the intention of killing him with a .22-caliber pistol on Nov. 26, 2010. He led the victim, Donte Williams, to Terrace Manor Elementary under the ruse they were going to smoke marijuana there, Myers said. Classes were out at the time.
As they approached the school, Werthen shot Williams in the arm with the pistol as revenge for “talking junk about him,” Myers said.
The victim “never saw it coming,” Myers said: “The only difference between this and a murder case is that Donte lived.”
Speaking on Werthen’s behalf, public defender Kate Mason said Werthen’s attitude has changed from angry to compliant since she first met him.
“I think he’s genuinely remorseful,” Mason said.
I don't understand, one shoots at his Mother and RC deputies and gets 7 yr. the other shoots his comrad, (birds of a feather) and gets ten. I guess the comrad is worth more than Mom and the police. Well, maybe next time they will get more time.
While cops are trying to do their jobs our justice system is trying to push cases through with plea bargins and in the end, all good law abiding citizens are losing. Enough is enough, put violent offenders where they belong and leave them there or give them the death penatly.
He'll be out in no time. 10 years means 30 days in this day and age. Once he's released he'll be back to his no good felonious ways taking advantage of law abiding citizens. I hope he runs into a citizen who has a CWP so he can get what he deserves,
