Although initially reported as a shooting, investigators now are unsure whether the man was shot or beaten, possibly a baseball bat. His head is too swollen to allow a conclusive determination, authorities said.

The man, who appeared to be in his mid-20s to early 30s, was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, and a condition wasn’t immediately available.

Anyone with information on the incident should call the Sheriff’s Office at (706) 821-1080.
