At 12:52 a.m., Devontae Romeo Roberts, 19, was released from jail by mistake. The details on what happened are still being investigated, but Sheriff Ronnie Strength said it was “human error.”

Roberts was arrested Dec. 18 in connection with an armed robbery of the Family Dollar on Deans Bridge Road, according to sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser.

The county Web site says Roberts committed a previous armed robbery in August 2009.

The Augusta Chronicle reported then that he turned himself in, in connection with the robbery of La Nay Nay’s Barber Shop at 2919 Peach Orchard Road in September 2009, when he was 16, and faced two counts of armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

According to a police report, two men entered the barber shop Aug. 27, and one was carrying a black shotgun. They demanded money and shot into the wall.

The county said Roberts spent 17 months in confinement. In January 2011, he was credited for time served and sentenced to eight years, seven months on probation.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in finding Roberts.

Anyone with information is asked to call (706) 821-1080.

Jail? Prison? Errantly?

Jail? Prison? Errantly? Just how long had he been in jail? When was his adjudication trial scheduled?
I disagree with dichotomy. Judges don't really make the law, they are bound by the decisions written by people we voters send to Atlanta to represent us. In fact Judges are mere spokepersons for the elected officials and don't really judge anything. In any event we voters are just as guilty as judges for making bad decisions, but many of us don't want to admit our failures at the ballot box.

i'm going to mentally file that one next to the time a guy with schizophrenia died of pnuemonia in there after having the check forging charges dropped well before. i think the sheriff called that one a clerical error. nice that he can categorize these errors for us, but is there any more he'd like to say?

Wouldn't there be some

Wouldn't there be some required written orders necessary to "let someone out of jail"? Did the guy just ring the front desk at one in the a.m. and say, I'll need my luggage brought down, now, please. What happened?

Right out of Idiocracy. Joe

Right out of Idiocracy. Joe has just arrived in prison.

JOE
(to guard, tentative)
Uh, actually... I'm getting out of
prison today?

The guard just stares at Joe, trying hard to process
this... then smacks Joe upside the head.

PRISON GUARD 2
You're in the wrong line, dumb***!

JOE
Yeah, uh... I'm a big dumb***. Sorry.

The guard grabs Joe, buzzes him through a security gate,
then shoves him into the "parole" line.

A third guard scans Joe's UPC and checks his computer
terminal.

PRISON GUARD 3
Uh... Uh, yeah. I don't see you in
here, so you're gonna have to, uh,
stay in prison.

JOE
Could you check again? 'Cause I was,
like, definitely in prison.
(points off)
That fat guy sat on my face and
everything.

The guard looks off, then looks down at his terminal, getting
confused. The guard concentrates very hard, looking for Joe's
name.

After a beat, Joe takes off running. Everyone just watches
him go.

Great job Richmond County. I hope he doesn't kill someone tonight.

Released from jail at 12:52

Released from jail at 12:52 a.m.Well, was his first stop Waffle House? Human error? Nah, couldn't be. Only computers make those kind of mistakes, the humans are just following orders from the computer. Yeah that's it! That sounds better than "human error."

These articles are

These articles are informative. We learn that the penalty for armed robbery with a shotgun is 17 months in confinement, then eight years probation. That's really great for our society.

In our neighborhood, white-t's were a gang color a few years ago. There was even a rap song out about it.
