Doniel Hicks, 24, of the 800 block of Spruce Street, was shot in the chest in the 200 block of East Telfair Street, according to Richmond County Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen.
Bowen said Hicks was brought to Medical College of Georgia Hospital and pronounced dead at 1:20 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.
Investigators taped off sections on both sides of East Telfair Street. On one side was a parking lot with an overturned bicycle and a jacket that Lt. Blaise Dresser said were involved in the case.
He released no other information about the slaying, including whether there is a suspect or motive.
Neighbors said they heard three shots and saw a man crawling in the parking lot.
This was Richmond County’s third homicide of the year.
In 2009, the River Glen complex was the scene of the killing of Jamar White and a shooting. In 2010, there were two more shootings, and in May 2011, it was the site of the unsolved homicide of Angelo Quinn Daggett.
River Glen is privately owned and managed and has long been a challenge for the Augusta Housing Authority. It is a unique complex in Augusta because its federally subsidized Section 8 rents are attached to the complex, leaving the housing authority’s role only to review rental applications for eligibility.
