A 21-year-old Martinez man told police he was robbed by a group of armed men on Broad Street early New Year’s Day.

The man told a Richmond County sheriff’s deputy that he was approached by a group of six black men at about 3 a.m. in the 800 block of Broad Street. He said three of the men raised their shirts to reveal handguns and demanded his money. The victim said he handed over his wallet. The robbers took some credit cards and the battery to a cell phone and returned his wallet and phone.

And they didn't know the stats, either. If only they were AC online posters, they would have known, Broad Street is very safe.

You have to admit that Augusta has some very polite thugs who will kindly return your phone (minus the battery) and your empty wallet! Of course there are some pretty dumb people too who will be walking alone on Broad Street at 3 am.

Not that it matters, but only

Not that it matters, but only 3 were armed, apparently. I mean it's not like I'm saying he should have started fighting them because only 3 and not all 6 had guns, but I'm just pointing out the flaw in the reporting.

This doesn't fit in with Countyman's assertion that the CBD is safe. He's the only one that thinks it's safe, the rest of us know better, maybe now he'll get it.

I do not believe this happeded. The Columbia County merchents association may well be putting people up to doing false reports to discourage people from going to downtown Augusta...North Augusta may be doing the same thing!

I notice how none of the

I notice how none of the posters actually live downtown, and some even claim they never visit.. Thousands of people chose to stay downtown after the New Year's celebration because they feel safe...

One robbery and the area isn't safe?? Robberies have taken place in every single area across the CSRA before... Their were a total of zero homicides in the CBD last year...

Corgimom.. The 6k people who live in the CBD and the thousands who were in attendance after 12am don't agree with you.. The developer of Sprint Food & Metro Market at 851 Broad street doesn't agree with you either.. He's building corporate offices on the 2nd floor and creating a urban market, restaurant/convenience store, and open air seating on the 1st floor.. The developer of the Whites Building invested $5 million to finish the remaining 34 condos.. 967 Broad street was recently renovated into four apartments, Tantra Lounge is open, 566 Broad street is being renovated, etc..

This amount of private construction doesn't happen in high crime areas.. The CBD speaks for itself in 2011, even Rural Sourcing located to the Enterprise Mill bringing 100 IT jobs... When people who can afford to live in West Augusta, Summerville, Forest Hills, Aiken, Evans, or Martinez choose to live in the CBD.. I don't think there's too much more to discuss...

We had the Ruff House built

We had the Ruff House built in one of the highest crime areas in the county. I like that "club" next to it with the outline of a curvy woman in the neon sign.

Countyman ended the conversation with this, "When people who can afford to live in West Augusta, Summerville, Forest Hills, Aiken, Evans, or Martinez choose to live in the CBD.. I don't think there's too much more to discuss..."

I wonder if Countyman asked everyone in the CBD if they could afford to buy in other places? I mean what makes one surmise because someone lives in a certain area that they don't WANT to live in other areas?

The Ruff house is located on

The Ruff house is located on the edge of the CBD and not in Laney Walker.. With all the new construction in Laney Walker, I'm sure crime is probably down especially violent..

The price of the real estate in the CBD is the key indicator.. Several of the new condos in the Whites Building are over $200k..

Exactly, RM. You could just

Exactly, RM. You could just as easily turn countyman's statement around and have an equally valid statement by saying:

When people who can afford to live in the Central Business District choose to live in West Augusta, Summerville, Forest Hills, Aiken, Evans, or Martinez; I don't think there's too much more to discuss.

:-)

So? There is a new subdivision about 100 yards from Barton Chapel and Milledgeville road that is in the 150k range and we know how safe that area is.

Well, all you have to do is walk across Walton Way from the Ruff House and you are no longer in the Central Business District. The “edges” are the “DANGER ZONES!”

Just a guess but WAG asked

Just a guess but WAG asked what he was doing on Broad Street at 3:00am, festivaties downtown I'm sure didn't end right at midnight and there are a lot of bars open late, I would assume he had been out celebrating New Years. Not smart, but remember he's only 21.
