A Richmond County sheriff’s deputy suffered a broken ankle, fractured knee and a head injury not considered life-threatening after at least two suspects ran him over and fled the scene Thursday evening at Surrey Center, the sheriff’s office said.

Lt. Robert West, a deputy at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center, was off-duty and working a special assignment when he was hit around 8:20 p.m., according to Capt. Scott Peebles.

As of Thursday evening, police were searching for at least two males involved, Peebles said.

West was patrolling the second level of Surrey Center when he saw a suspicious vehicle and approached.

Peebles said West called out to the people inside and asked to speak to them when the suspects shifted the car into reverse, turned toward West and “gunned” the car into drive.

“Every indication is they struck him intentionally,” Peebles said.

About 30 minutes later, deputies found the suspects’ car, a silver Pontiac Grand Prix, abandoned on Johns Road near Gardner Street.

Peebles said the vehicle is a rental car and thought to be stolen.

“They were likely involved in some sort of criminal activity,” he said.

West was transported to a hospital, but Peebles said he will recover.

West has worked the special detail at Surrey Center for many years, patrolling the parking lots at night and keeping the area secure, Peebles said.

Another senseless violent act

Another senseless violent act towards one of our brave law enforcement officers in the area. Lt. West is often seen in the area by patrons and business owners patrolling the area and ensuring their safety. In this case, he was checking out suspicious activity and was almost the second deputy killed in the line of duty this year.

Our commission needs to do far more to show support for our deputies and Public Safety in general. Public Safety MUST become a priority of theirs.

As for these suspects, anyone who will intentionally attempt to kill an armed law enforcement officer is extremely dangerous to all citizens and when caught should be held WITHOUT BAIL until they receive a sentence keeping them behind bars for the remainder of their lives.

We must do more to support our Sheriff and our deputies. May God Bless Lt. West, his family, and his extended law enforcement family, the Deputies of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

What a shame. I hope the officer recovers fully. Imagine the crime that shopping center would endure without them hiring officers for special police protection. So no one has been caught? This would be a case where I wouldn't spare expenses and get fingerprints off the car and any other thing that may help.

I had been wondering if I wanted to check out Surrey Center for possible Christmas shopping. Guess I can scratch that off my list! I hope these thugs are apprehended and locked away for a long time. As far as a judge ordering them held without bond, that is highly unlikely in Richmond County. Judges in Augusta are historically sympathetic to criminals than they are to the victims of criminals!

Curly, you can't say that about Judge Overstreet. After all HE took personal care of a thug that broke into his home not long ago. I am praying that these thugs that attempted to kill this officer are apprehended quickly and put away for a long time, and also praying that Lt. West recovers fully and returns to duty.

Curly.. Please don't let one

Curly.. Please don't let one person's action stop you from visiting the Surrey Center.. The center wouldn't be able to attract certain stores and clientle if crime was a major problem.. The Surrey Center definitely has less problems compared to the majority of shopping areas in metro Augusta...

There's a reason why so many officers want to work specials for extra money at the Surrey Center.. It's a easy job normally consisting of just patrolling around and doing nothing..

And as for Deputies working specials it not only increases security but it great community policing, a chance to know there guys up close and personal. Very sorry this happened to one of our good guys and can only hope they catch the scum.

This is coming from somebody who knows LEO's around Augusta...

When you visit the Surrey Center? What do you see the 1 or 2 cops doing? I normally see them sitting in the car or standing beside French Market Grille. When the Vue let's out late at night they clear they parking lot and that's it...

They are about to announce

They are about to announce the name of the "still at large" suspect in this attempted murder of Lt. West. he is a well known felon with a record of attacking police officers.

Imagine that.

We need some harsher habitual offender statutes in this state so judges will have no choice but to lock these sorts of creeps up and throw away the key.

It doesn't work that way,

It doesn't work that way, Corporal. A federal court judge has ruled that Georgia prisons are overcrowded. He has ordered that for every prisoner admitted into the state prison system, another prisoner must be released. We will need to build some more prison cells to have your very practical suggestion be available to implement.

Remember a few years ago when

Remember a few years ago when everyone was up in arms when the cops shot and killed the guy in Cherry Tree and the guy in South Augusta because they gunned their cars in the direction of the officers? Everybody said they could have just gotten out of the way of the car. This proves that isn't always the case. These men didn't care whether they killed this officer or not. What would those people be saying today if Lt. West had shot the driver of this car? People, a 3500 pound car is a deadly weapon when aimed at a pedestrian. If the driver gets shot in self defense so be it. Get well soon Lt. West, and next time have your weapon drawn and be ready to defend yourself!

"@CRRTV: and better body

"@CRRTV: and better body armor would have helped this deputy in what way exactly? RCSO uses a high quality vest already. level 3 and higher is not practical for everyday use."

Tell ya what nissan lets both stand behind a car. You can have the little vest the cops wear to "PROTECT" them and i'll be clad head to toe with the latest dragon skin or whatever i can find to protect me from the road rash and such you'll have when the car finishes backing over us. A driver willing to run over a cop is also just as willing to open fire on you with likely small arms or shotgun fire so we'll let someone open up on both of us with some buck shot just to keep it real. This is what our cops face every single day they strap on their duty belt. So when you want to do this? It'll look great on TV:o)
