Several agencies are involved in the raid of an Evans home Friday night that has resulted in a dozen arrests, said Columbia County Sheriff Clay Whittle.

Investigators search a suspect while placing him under arrest in a raid on a home in The Estates of Jones Creek subdivision in Evans on Friday.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and representatives of the FBI, IRS and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are searching 2021 Grace Ave. in Evans, where people were sitting on the side of the road in handcuffs.

Whittle said there are raids being conducted at three houses in Columbia County and one in Richmond County, but all the addresses haven’t been released.

Information regarding the raid is under a sealed federal indictment and could possibly be available within a few days, Whittle said.

The arrests are being handled through ICE, he said.

Officers arrived at the home, located in The Estates at Jones Creek subdivision, about 5 p.m. Friday.

There was no danger posed to other residents before or during the raid, Whittle said.

“No one needs to be alarmed at the presence of these people,” he said.

County records show that the lot was purchased by Hugo Diaz in 2008. The 11,500-square-foot home has eight bedrooms and bathrooms and is valued at about $1.7 million.

matjoe, that may very well be part of it. My contractor used his services to build my house and if all of those workers were legal, I'm Santa Claus. Maybe some workers in ColCo will now be able get some work at a wage they can live on.

I had heard rumors about

I had heard rumors about these people before, but you never know if rumors are true. The houses in this sub-div. look kind of dreary and gothic, but bad taste isn't a crime, so it's obviously something else.

bailmeout said.."why don't you fine or arrest the contractors that use the workers? Is it cuz they are normal church goin folk?"

Fantastic idea!! Right after they arrest the people who purchased them!!!

There is no current law that requires a general contractor to determine the citizenship of subcontractors. Their responsibility is to obtain name, address, social security number or federal ID if sub is incorporated and to file a 1099 with the IRS at the year end on amounts paid over $600.

Further more, it is not the general contractor's responsibility as to whether or not the subcontractor pays his own taxes or his employees withholding taxes.

Again, the accusations fly with no facts.

True Willow, there is a

True Willow, there is a little kink to that. Three trade contractors in Georgia (heating and air, electrical, plumbing) are required to have legal employees...not sub-contractors. Several of those trade companies currently working in the area for Atlanta contractors have been fined for violations in the past. Those trades have been fined for not having employees but 1099 workers instead.

Cynical, that's good info and

Cynical, that's good info and makes sense for those trades. There are a number of companies/suppliers that have followed out of town builders to the area and problems have been rumored.

If I were buying or building, I would think local, think references and think service after the sale from a company that was grounded in the community. We usually get what we pay for.

bailmeout is right willow. He didn't specify what he was talking about, you just assumed and jumped on the defensive, wonder why that is? Don't tell me you honestly believe some these contractors arent paying under the table. If the contractor gets the info with ss and files the correct irs papers, then they shouldnt be arrested as they are assuming their employee is legal, but you know tons of them are willingly paying illegals and legals in cash!! Its not the contractors fault if an illegal is a criminal falsifying documents, if the government fell for it, how would the contractor know?? But, They definitely know something criminal is going on if they pay cash with no paper trail!

You are right cynical, but that's not just for purposes of catching those hiring illegals, those companies also pay legals with 1099's when they shouldn't. I know plenty of people around here who do that also to get around taxes, workers comp, matching SS and medicare. Just waiting on their time to get caught.

What are you talking about willow? It does not mean all their employees, and yes I know plenty of general contractors who have several under the table employees. They don't write off their pay as an expense, they eat it because it would cost them more to report it. I'm laughing at you for making no sense what so ever. Bad comeback!!! No one said anything about a general contractor doing all their business in cash. There you go not comprehending what you are reading again and spinning it into something it's not. Very touchy on the subject....I think I know why!!!

As a former GC I can tell you

As a former GC I can tell you very few contractors pay "under the table". The vast majority look for every deduction available. It's really simple. The more you can show in expenses the less profit you show, thus lowering the tax liability. I don't think it can be explained any simpler than that.
