Georgia tied with California and Arizona for the most officers killed in the line of duty last year, according to FBI data released Monday.

The FBI says 56 law enforcement officers were slain in the line of duty last year, while 72 died in accidents and 53,469 officers were assaulted in the line of duty. Five officers were killed in Georgia in 2010.

The 56 deaths were eight more than in 2009, when 48 officers were killed nationwide and in Puerto Rico.

Georgia did not have any officers killed in the line of duty in 2009.

The five Georgia officers killed were with the Carrollton, Chattahoochee Hills and Dougherty County police departments, Rockdale County Sherriff’s Office and Forest Park Georgia State Patrol.

Two cases were unprovoked, one was during a traffic stop, one was during a robbery, and one was a death related to injuries received nearly 30 years previously while answering a call to investigate suspicious persons.

All deaths were caused by gunshots.

In the 56 cases, 15 officers were ambushed, 14 were involved in arrests and eight were investigating suspects or suspicious circumstances at the time of their deaths.

Twenty-two of the slayings occurred in the South, 18 in the West, 10 in the Midwest, and three were in the Northeast. Three slayings took place in Puerto Rico.

We should also continue to

We should also continue to cut the pay and benefits of all law enforcement officers because as we all know, they are lazy, and not out catching real criminals. Besides, law enforcement officers can't really be trusted anyways.
