Augusta woman wounds man, 85, while trying to shoot possum

An Augusta man trying to remove a possum from a chicken pen Saturday morning was accidently shot in the face by an acquaintance, police said.

According to a news release from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to the 1000 block of 14th Avenue about 4 a.m. and found Alfonsia O’Bryant, 85, shot once on the left side of his face.

Evelyn Smith, a friend who lived with him, told officers they had intended to shoot a possum that had gotten into a chicken pen. She said she fired a .32-caliber pistol at the possum but the bullet struck O‘Bryant.

She then shot the possum and called police. O’Bryant was taken to University Hospital for treatment and the incident was ruled an accident, police said in a news release.
