A Martinez parolee fought police Thursday evening.

It took handcuffs, leg irons and straps, and pepper spray to subdue an irate and combative Matthew Thomas Faircloth, 28, deputies said.

Police say Faircloth didn’t stop for a hit-and-run wreck he was involved in on Oakley Pirkle Road just after 8 p.m. A Columbia County sheriff’s deputy tried to pull him over about 200 yards away. Even with blue lights flashing and siren blaring, Faircloth refused to stop, but waved his arms as if he wanted the deputy to follow him, according to a sheriff’s office incident report.

Traveling less than 10 mph, the deputy pulled alongside Faircloth’s truck and motioned for him to stop. He then got out of his truck and came toward the deputy yelling, “No,” and refusing to get back in the vehicle, the report stated. The deputy drew his gun and again demanded Faircloth get back into his truck, but he was irate and continued toward the deputy.

The deputy grabbed Faircloth’s arm, laid him on the hood of the patrol car and attempted to handcuff him. After a brief struggle, Faircloth was handcuffed and put in the back of the patrol car. He then told the deputy he had a knife and a gun and could have cut the deputy if he wanted, the report stated. The deputy found no gun, but did find a knife on the seat.

Faircloth then began kicking the windows of the patrol car, so he was placed in leg irons. He continued kicking and addressed a second deputy with a racial slur, so they tried leg straps to subdue him.

While trying to grab Faircloth’s legs, the deputy said that he kept kicking, so he threatened to use pepper spray. Faircloth responded with “I just did a decade in prison. I drink that (stuff).”

Faircloth, of the 100 block of Maple Creek Drive, spent the majority of the past decade in prison on drug charges. He was released from the Augusta Transition Center in April, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections Web site.

The deputy used the pepper spray after Faircloth continued kicking. Faircloth “was then compliant,” the report stated.

The deputy gave Faircloth water to combat the pepper spray effects and emergency medical personnel evaluated him.

Faircloth was charged with obstruction of law enforcement officers, driving under the influence, carrying a concealed weapon, hit and run, having no brakes and an existing battery warrant. He’s being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond.

What time does the Probate

What time does the Probate Court's offices close on Fridays?

My indolent procrastination allowed my PTCACW to expire.
