2 men robbed at gunpoint in downtown Augusta

  • Follow Crime & courts

A North Augusta man and his friend were robbed at gunpoint early Thursday morning in downtown Augusta, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident occurred between the 1100 and 1300 blocks of Ellis Street after 2:30 a.m., according to an incident report. The two friends were walking from a bar to the Huddle House near 13th Street when two black males on bicycles approached them. One of the perpetrators put a small caliber handgun to the head one of the victims.

The suspects then took cellphones, a silver necklace, ID cards and a Net Spend Prepaid Card worth $900 from the victims' pockets, the report says.

The first suspect is described as about 6 feet 1 inch and 185 pounds, with a lazy eye, dressed in a long, white T-shirt and blue jeans. The other was about 5 feet 7 inches tall and wore a long, white T-shirt and blue shorts.

There is no way you have that

There is no way you have that much of a description without race. Do your job AC and give full and as acurate as possible descriptions - ALWAYS.

This is once again the reason I don't go downtown to the bars late at night, or at all for that matter.

If you can remeber when

If you can remeber when downtown was safe at night, you must mean safe other than stepping in the occasional pile of horse apples. I've lived in the Augusta area since '77, and cannot remember a time it was safe after stores closed.

The downtown(CBD) is very

The downtown(CBD) is very much still an overall safe area.. After the convenience store and armored truck robberies in Martinez.. Nobody came on here and said the Martinez area wasn't safe anymore. No one commented Aiken isn't safe due to the homicide this week. The Sunday night Jazz Series along the riverwalk is packed all the time.. The CBD population is close to 6k people now.. The people who are afraid of downtown, are the same people who claim they don't visit downtown.. The Central Business District in 2011 is much diffrent from the 80's or early 90's.. The Central Business District is a growing place to live, work, and play.. The construction(851 Broad street old belk building: 2nd floor Sprint Foods offices: 1st floor restaurant with open air space and convenience store) happening soon next the Common proves my statement..

Ok countyman, you seem to put

Ok countyman, you seem to put in a lot of work in research and publishing information, mind researching overall crime statistics in Columbia County compared to ARC? How many people have been killed, or robbed, or assaulted in Richmond County compared to Aiken or Martinez? My god, can you just man up and admit that downtown Augusta isn't a safe place to go after a certain hour?

Nobody is comparing the

Nobody is comparing the overall crime rate in Richmond vs Columbia County.. The Central Business District makes up one area of Richmond County.. Zero people have been killed in the Central Business District this year..

There are 14 homicides in RC(200k) this year and probably the same amount in Aiken County(160k).. Columbia county(124k) probably has around 4 to 5..

Has anyone read the Aug/Sept issue of Garden and Gun magazine on Greenville S.C.? Compare that with the G&G article a couple of years back on Augusta. Nuff said.

Downtown isn't a safe place

Downtown isn't a safe place to go at any hour. And this is not said by someone who has not grown up in Augusta, or someone who has not patronized Broad Street. Anyone who says that I could safely walk the street today by myself or with a companion and shop is not telling the truth. There are two significant factors; very few people are down there, with the exception of some events, and there is no law enforcement presence which makes every citizen a target for crime.

Funny, Raul, mentions, Gardens & Guns Magazine, that is what I think of when remembering we are the Garden City….with a Gun.

When are the liberal/progressives, leaders in the black communities and black churches admit the entitlement mentality they have taught blacks for the last 30 to 40 is the reason for most of this epidemic of violence and crime. Take a look at the web site below. Where are Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson protesting these HATE CRIMES!!

Drivenslow.. The shooting

Drivenslow.. The shooting last night happen off MLK and 13th Avenue which is located in the Bethlehem area.. 13th street is located in the Central Business District.. 13th street and and 13th avenue are two totally diffrent sides of town... There's still a total of zero homicides in the Central Business District this year..

WillowBailey... Yes, you can walk by yourself downtown without any problems.. People who live downtown jog and bike early in the morning everyday..

I find it hilarious the people who live downtown continue to say it's an overall safe area.. While the people who don't visit the area think it's not safe..

I find it hilarious the

I find it hilarious the people who continue to say Augusta is so safe. Day to day people are getting shot in the very same places deemed so safe. I remember commenting weeks ago about Hephzibah's growing crime problem, only to be told the area is virtually crime free.

Fear and common sense are two different things. I won't frequent the downtown area in the wee hours of the morning at all.

countyman, I have a distinct

countyman, I have a distinct feeling you and I look a lot different than each other. You may be safer, I assure you, that I would not be.

Maybe the city should have an undercover female officer who looks and dresses like the female clientele who would be able to contribute to the financial growth of the merchants try it several days a week at varied times for one month with WRDW filming and reporting it as a documentary and testimony as to how safe Augusta Downtown is for all of us non-believers. Then we could finally get behind you, and promote our City to be as safe as you seem to believe.

You may be correct about it being safer early in the morning between 5:00 - 6:30 a.m. as the thugs are probably passed out somewhere until after lunch. It would still be safer only in numbers.

Don't tell me I haven't tried to patronize downtown, because you don't know. And don't try to tell me or any other female that she is safe walking around Augusta, unless you are trying to get them killed. The reason we don't have the statistics to back up what I am saying, is no one is stupid enough to try it.
