Judge sentences 5 in deadly Atlanta carjacking

ATLANTA — A judge has sentenced five people to more than a decade in prison for their roles in a series of armed carjackings and thefts in a crime spree that left one person dead.

U.S. District Judge Julie Carnes on Monday ordered the five defendants to serve between 13 years and 24 years in prison.

The five pleaded guilty to weapons and carjacking charges linked to a December 2008 crime spree that involved car thefts, carjackings and several robberies. A sixth suspect was killed in a car accident during a high-speed chase.

Pedro Perez Barrera was sentenced to 24 years, Gloria Galvin was sentenced to 21 years, Irma Ovalles was sentenced to 19 years, Jerry Arriaga was sentenced to 16 years and Francisco Arellano was sentenced to about 13 years.
