Teen pleads not guilty in death of neighbor

A Harlem teen accused in the shooting death of his friend and neighbor pleaded not guilty in a Columbia County court Friday afternoon.

Lacy Aaron Schmidt, 14, pleaded not guilty to murder, theft and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime during the arraignment hearing at the courthouse in Evans.

Schmidt, of the 1400 block of Miles Road, is accused of fatally shooting his neighbor and friend Alana Calahan, also 14, inside her Miles Road home Jan. 31.

He initially claimed he saw an intruder on the property, but eventually said he accidentally discharged Alana's father's gun as she sat at the computer in her family's dining room.

Police found the gun in nearby woods. They also found the gun case, a box of ammunition and owner's manual, and a camera belonging to the Calahans inside his home.

Schmidt was a family friend of the Calahans.

He is being held in the Regional Youth Detention Center without bond while awaiting trial.

Also arraigned Friday afternoon were four of six men charged in connection with dozens of stolen electronics that were being sold from a Martinez restaurant.

Toribio Marquez, of Devon Road in Grovetown, was the manager of Monterrey's restaurant at 4018 Washington Road. He pleaded not guilty to theft by receiving stolen property at the hearing.

Daniel Arroyo Lopez, 27, of Springhouse Lane in Augusta, and Abel Martinez-Martinez, of South Old Belair Road in Grovetown, pleaded not guilty to criminal attempt to commit theft by receiving.

Two Augusta men -- Deniro MKeal Wilson, of Overlook Drive, and Gerald Andrew Moore, of Rome Way, pleaded not guilty to burglary charges.

Darren Jayquan Moore, of Lambert Court; and Ronnie Boozer, of Waterfront Drive, also face burglary charges.
