Ga. woman: 'I shot him as much as I could'

  • Follow Crime & courts

DULUTH, Ga. — 911 tapes recount a dramatic attack as a woman shot and killed a knife-wielding intruder who police say attacked her in her home near Duluth.

WSB-TV reports the tapes, released Wednesday by Gwinnett County authorities, record the tearful woman telling a 911 dispatcher that she tried to fend off the man, and managed to grab her gun at one point.

The woman said she grabbed her .22-caliber firearm, and "I shot him as much as I could."

Police said she shot the man nine times. They said he ran out of a back door and collapsed in her yard

Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said the woman was getting out of the shower May 11 when the intruder turned out the lights and attacked her.

The argument that stricter

The argument that stricter gun controls will just ensure that only criminals have guns is an old and fully discredited argument. Most criminals possess guns that they stole from people like you. If you didn't have that gun, it wouldn't now be in the hands of some killer. Do you all honestly think criminals go to gun shows and pay retail?

As far as my knowledge of 2nd Amendment is concerned, it's fairly thorough. That amendment was passed in 1791. In 1784, the US had established its standing army, but it was virtually identical to the Continental Army (1775), which was nothing more than the "well regulated militia" mentioned in the 2nd Amendment. At the time, each volunteer provided his own weapon, which was routinely a flintlock, long-bore rifle. Hardly an assault rifle capable of killing dozens of people in a few seconds.

If you are strict constitutionalist, the 2nd Amendment does not guarantee anybody the right to "bear arms" unless you're in an official state militia. In fact, the ratified form of the amendment states:

"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Citibank once again proves
Unpublished

Citibank once again proves that they have no knowledge of either the Constitution or facts. Their reading comprehension skills are quite lacking as well. I'm confident too that THEY would be the biggest whiner when a criminal breaks into their home and the police aren't there to protect the within ten seconds. When asked why I carry a handgun, LEGALLY, I always respond "because a cop will not fit into the holster". As far as their assertion that criminals use guns "stolen from people like you", that also is a false statement. Yes, most guns that criminals use are obtained illegally, but not from stealing from "people like me". There is a HUGE black market for undocumented weapons, mostly operated by drug syndicates where "legal" guns are laundered into the hands of criminals, but they most certainly are not obtained by thefts from law abiding citizens. WE protect our weapons by locking them in safes when they are not on our person. Please stop showing your ignorance.

Gun nuts, why do you think it

Gun nuts, why do you think it is imperative that all Americans be allowed to own assault rifles and extended magazine clips that can hold +30 rounds?(pistols and hunting rifles are one thing) Are you one of the people who think that the Founding Fathers wanted us to be able to mount an armed insurrection against our own government? I mean, if 49% of the country hates the President, his health care reform and don't think he's a real American, should they have the right to take up arms against the other 51%? And, if they did, how long would they last against the US Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, FBI, and National Guard? I mean, what exactly is the practical application of this right to bear arms, beyond hunting rifles and target pistols?

How about other people's freedom not to live in fear because their community is armed to the teeth and filled with paranoid lunatics who think everything is a conspiracy against them?

Proudgunowner, The 2nd

Proudgunowner,

The 2nd amendment was written at a time when the Continental Army was composed of volunteer militias. Members of those militias had to provide their own weapons, which were routinely muskets, and they were to be under the authority of the President. This continued long after the Continental Army was disbanded in 1784. Until the federal government supplied all of the weapons for the army, in 1791, the 2nd amendment played an important role.

The Framers NEVER foresaw the invention of semi-automatic weapons, nor did they ever think that people would walk into schools and slaughter dozens of kids with them. They never realized violent crime would become a national disgrace and that tens of thousands of people would die every year from guns. If they had, they would have made gun control an integral part of the Constitution.

The notion that "freedom only exists when a government has reason to fear the citizens" is only true when those citizens are not permitted to vote in free elections and dissent without fear of reprisal. The Framers would NEVER have written the Constitution with the intent that armed revolt in this country is an acceptable alternative.

The argument that everybody has a constitutional right to own a semi-automatic weapon is without merit and a real stretch for anyone who says they're defending the Constitution.

We are now in the 21st century, NOT the 18th century. The original Constitution was wrong about a lot of things. It declared that African-Americans were only 3/5s human. Study that. If the Founding Fathers knew that thousands of citizens would be killed by easily acquired weapons, the 2nd Amendment would probably have been written much less broadly.

Argue all you want, this lady

Argue all you want, this lady was lucky to be her own well regulated militia and she used the right tactic by "I shot him as much as I could."
Bravo lady.....well done. May we see many more of these types of stories.

And yes, the Constitution DOES guarantee the right to bear arms. "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED." The first part of that sentence is not a limiting factor but merely pointing out the reason for the very broad and very literal second part of the sentence.

"Are you one of the people who think that the Founding Fathers wanted us to be able to mount an armed insurrection against our own government?"

Actually, I think they may have considered that a possibility and I think it goes right along with their thinking when they said in the Declaration of Independence that part about "it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government". Not likely nowadays but I think it was considered a valid alternative when dealing with an out of control, intrusive, over-taxing government. Hmmm.

The framers wrote the constitution with the clear idea that if the government should become tyrannical, an armed citizenry would give them pause. We have become sheep and the framers would not even recognize us nor what our government has become. God help us!

Good for the lady! She took out a booger and saved taxpayers the cost of a trial, a brief incarceration, ("He was a good boy, Your Honor, and always gave his mama money. Kudos to the victim. Don't be a victim, be a well armed, well trained and prepared citizen. When seconds count, law enforcment at its very best will be minutes away. Every honest, law abiding citizen should be trained in firearms and own a properly secured firearm.

The lady needs to be taken in

The lady needs to be taken in by the police and given what she deserves...

A badge and better cal. gun!

Shame on her for only having a nine shot .22cal. A lady with guts like this needs to have at least a 9mm with a hi-cap military or police style magazines (at leat three loaded and by her sidearm) so she can drill punks with relative ease who attack her.

JesusCitiBank,

YOu are proving yourself to be not so understanding of the USC or the reason we have the right to bear arms. I suggest you imagine this lady was your mother or wife, and think about what home invaders do to females, and then think if you would want them violated like that so you could have some liberal gun control view. I am sure if you were honest you would be like Rosie ODonnell who doesn't want US to have guns, while packing a .38 herself.

An Armed Society is a Polite Society,

Actually, JSACB is right

Actually, JSACB is right about the 2nd Ammendment in that it was originally intended to allow the people to form a well regulated militia. However, that has evolved into the literal meaning that people apply to it today.
I am not anti gun nor am I pro gun...if you want to legally own a gun thats fine by me. I currently do not. Owning a gun does not make one a gun nut though JSACB...and if we did take away the 2nd Ammendment, the issue with people being shot and killed would not go away. The way the world is today, I forsee that the problem might even escalate b/c the criminals know the cops are stretched too far and that theres very little likelihood of getting shot by the victim.

fftaz71, You are wrong Sir.

fftaz71,

You are wrong Sir. In the Bill of Rights, it addresses INDIVIDUAL rights, so it is not about the giverment's standing at all.

"A well regulated militia being nesscesary to the security of a free State, the right of the PEOPLE to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Pretty clear in plain ol' English huh?

Jesus Saves!! What makes you

Jesus Saves!! What makes you think that the armed forces are not on the side of the conservative, gun owners. Besides I thought all liberals believed in an evolving Constitution that changed with the times. Remember the Supreme Court ruled some years ago that the police are under no legal compulsion to stop a assault on citizens if they fear for their own safety. Like the man said " I can't carry a cop in this holster". Also there is no records of any bystanders being injured in shootouts between citizens and criminals which happen every day but are not reported by the main stream media. "Beautify America,Shoot a Perp".

Sorry JSACB, I do not agree with you at all. Criminals are criminals and honest citizens are honest citizens that have guns to protect them from people like that man. Bravo for the lady. She did the right thing. In my house I have 1-380, 1-9m, 1-357, 1 judge that shoots 45 and 410 shot gun shells and 1 long gun. In my car I have a 380 15 shot.
Never had to use them but will to protect my wife or myself.

This breakin was just miles

This breakin was just miles from my house... the woman was in the shower....his plan was not only to rob-possibly kill & rape her....she protected herself with a GUN...just like the good judge did in Augusta....we have had many home invasions in the last years in & around this county (Gwinnett) can you imagine how bad it would be if we didn't have a gun in the home......we have had so much crime that most neighborhoods have the watch program now......when we see anything out of the norm we report it.....alert neighbors & dogs in the yard are good protection.
