Man charged with molesting teenager

  • Follow Crime & courts

An HIV-positive assistant band director has been arrested on charges he coerced a 15-year-old boy into engaging in sex acts.

McCauley
McCauley

According to a Richmond County Sheriff's Office incident report filed Monday, Travis McCauley, 32, who is assistant band director of the CSRA All-Star Band, had sex with the boy three weeks ago.

A second incident occurred a week ago, when McCauley performed a sex act on the boy, the sheriff's office was told.

The boy became concerned after learning that McCauley was HIV-positive.

After McCauley was confronted through a text message sent by the victim's mother, he admitted to the acts, according to an incident report.

An updated report says McCauley was arrested Wednesday on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, aggravated child molestation and reckless conduct by an HIV-infected person. Bond was set at $6,800 on the contributing to the delinquency charge, but the jail Web site lists no bond on the other charges.

Editors's note: Factual errors in an earlier version of this story have been corrected. An updated story containing police interviews has been posted on-line.

"band official" or "band

"band official" or "band director??" never heard of a "band official." Wonder why they chose to call him something different in the headline and the story????

People this narcissistic and

People this narcissistic and self-absorbed will always represent a danger to other people, regardless of their HIV status. Especially the young.

Prison is not a good place for sick people. Sometimes that's not a bad thing.

"Prison is not a good place

"Prison is not a good place for sick people."

Prisons are notorious for having lots and lots and lots of HIV+ and AIDS infected inmates. That's where a whole lot of men contract the virus.

Fiat Lux, do you really believe that prisoners don't have HIV or full-blown AIDS?

In fact, the vast majority of prisoners are sick with TB, Hepatitis, HIV, AIDS, venereal diseases and other long-term, chronic diseases. If they don't have it when they come in, they leave with them.

"Band official" is shorthand

"Band official" is shorthand for the headline. It's a generic, catchall term. His title is "assistant band director," as stated in the body of the text.

Jason, yeah...... I still

Jason, yeah...... I still disagree with you. The term "official" makes him sound WAY more important than he actually is to the organization that he works for. "director" is the same length as, "official," and while he is an assistant director, I think, "band director," would have been better.

Oh, and yet again, this

Oh, and yet again, this article isn't written by an actual person, but, rather, "Staff." if nobody is proud enough of the story to put their name on it, I guess I shouldn't expect much from that article.

Sweet Son, atleast Burke

Sweet Son, atleast Burke County charged her with all they could and she has no chance of bond right now. $6800 is insane. If I was related to that year old I would bond him out and he would be mine to punish when he walked out 401.

OhWell, I was not in the best humor when I made that post. I told sassie on another story that I should not have made the Richmond, Burke, Columbia comparision. I will say it again, I wish it were not always us against them. I own property in all three counties.

The male age of consent in

The male age of consent in europe is 16.

Everyone knows that America has been made way more progressive

than europe in the last couple of years.

So 15 is not much of a stretch.

In fact the judges and politicians would really like to see the age for

males at 13 or 12 in the next couple of years.

The judges and politicians are not getting any younger you see, time is

of the essence if they are to get their fill of young flesh.

The fact that after two seperate sex acts, with substancial time in

between, the "victim" only "became concerned after learning the

suspect was HIV positive." does not lend creedence to a claim of

repeated acts of coersion.

In fact it takes away from it.

I think the young man ought to get himself checked into the

progressive counseling program of Augusta State where his

issues with his future life of homosexual behavior can be corrected,

validated, and celebrated.

After a long talk in the judges chambers of course.

I don't know what disturbs me

I don't know what disturbs me more. The fact that this nasty creep was engaging in sexual acts with his students, or the fact that he did so knowingly with HIV. How sick can you really be? Not only did he molest these kids, but he might have infected them with HIV. Whatever they do to him won't make up for a thing if one of his victims has that virus. Not only does the victim have to deal with being taken advantage of by a nasty, no-good, demon-dog, but now they might be HIV-positive. There are some things I could say, but I don't think its polite to use that many curse words in public.

An adult has been a 15 year

An adult has been a 15 year old; a 15 year old has never been an adult.

Coercing a child is easy for an adult to do. Fortunately, most adults don't find it amusing or desirable to destroy a child, so they refrain.

Children are taught to obey and respect and look up to adults; right there that gives adults an unfair advantage. A 15 year old doesn't stand a chance against a 32 year old predator, especially one that he looks up to.

That so-called man is a walking, talking piece of dooky. He's not even human. I could easily vote to give him the death penalty, just like he gave that 15 year old.

Catawba7, a 15 year old

Catawba7, a 15 year old doesn't know what they are doing, anytime, anywhere. They THINK they do, but they don't.

15 year olds are known for impulsive actions without considering the consequences.

$6800 bond = $680 or 10%.

$6800 bond = $680 or 10%. This little amount to release a HIV Positive Pedofile is uncalled for. What was the Judge thinking when he set the bail so low?

They said NO bond was set for

They said NO bond was set for the other charges so I hope he pays the bail cause he still wont b getting out... school officials should b tested for HIV and NO ONE should b allowed near our children with HIV and anyone who has it and does things that put ppl at risk should face all new charges...

why does he have HIV and is working in the school and why doesnt the school know? they have to go through physicals for the job so why not HIV tests as well?

and my son would of told me this guy was acting weird or if he attempted somethin theres a good chance my son would of hit him as we have had these talks thoroughly and I have told him in a situation u feel threatened and someone is trying to lead u somewhere KNOCK THEM OUT and run like no other, I will have his back and not be mad...

Victim's Mom, I am very sorry

Victim's Mom, I am very sorry about what has happened to your family. I hope that you get the community support that you need and deserve. Try not to get angry about what shows up in the media. If you pay attention to it, you will stay upset. The main thing is to get your son the help he will need. Bless you.
