A Hephzibah man found hanging in his cell at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on Phinizy Road on Wednesday was in jail on charges that he stole more than $86,000 worth of items from his former employer.

Dwayne Coleman Giles, 34, of 4442 Deans Bridge Road, was charged with burglary and two counts of theft by taking, Richmond County Sheriff's Maj. Gene Johnson said.

On Nov. 21, deputies received a report that someone had broken into Augusta Industrial Coatings Inc. at 911 Haynes Drive within the past 24 hours. The complainant told deputies that the perimeter gate was open and the metal roll-up door to the warehouse was no longer closed, a Richmond County Sheriff's report said.

The complainant identified two people who he thought could be responsible because they were recently fired for failing to take a company-mandated drug test. One of them was Giles. The other man has not been arrested, according to police.

Sheriff's Lt. Tony Walden said he was present when investigators served a search warrant at Giles' home. Inside, they found items from the business.

Stolen from the warehouse were three paint spray pumps valued at $4,600 apiece, six pressure-washing units valued at $2,500 apiece, and a steam pressure-washing unit attached to a trailer with a 300-gallon water tank valued at $10,500. Also stolen were two pickup trucks, several trailers, and numerous other items including steel-toed safety boots and a 100-foot water hose, according to an itemized report of the missing items.

"I think he was trying to generate some money so he could start his own painting business," Walden said.

Giles is believed to have committed suicide within a 10- to 15-minute window while deputies handed out prescription medications, according to Georgia Bureau of Investigations Special Agent in Charge Mike Ayers, who is in charge of investigating the incident.

Ayers said the inmate hanged himself using items in his cell that were not contraband.

An autopsy has been done, but the official report is not complete.

"We don't have any official report at this time because toxicology is pending," he said. "But the indication is that it appears to be a suicidal hanging."

So, how many inmates have

So, how many inmates have hung themselves at the CWDT? It seems like one or two a year. It seems that they could limit items in the cell so hanging would be impossible. If found guilty, this guy was a thief, not a murderer or pedophile... I would say good riddance to the latter, but this guy must have been distraught to the extreme.

Since the facility opened on

Since the facility opened on November 17, 1997, there have been two actual suicides at the CBWDC. There has been one natural death (heart attack). Inmates are allowed to have socks and underwear. Sometimes folks give absolutely no indication as to what they're thinking.

When drugs enter the picture

When drugs enter the picture it never seems to end well. It seems that this man may have had a serious drug problem since the article stated that he was fired for refusing to take a drug test. If this is in fact the case, he may have been suffering from depression caused by withdrawal from the drugs.

must have been some fine thread count sheets to support that big guy. otoh, seems bad decisions were a habit.

curious. was he in isolation because he was new to the jail? i thought there was an overcrowding problem. sorry if i'm naive about conditions and procedures, i've never been there.

I feel for the self-imposed
Unpublished

I feel for the self-imposed death sentence Dwayne Giles gave himself. I do wish murderers, rapists and child molesters were so inclined.

Funny that the paper does not

Funny that the paper does not say that his family has a lawyer and that the GBI are involved...... Just leaving it at that! Oh and for those wondering my statement is very very true!

I am anti-death penalty, but

I am anti-death penalty, but I think it's ridiculous the lengths jails and prisons go to to keep people from killing themselves. I'm not saying encourage them...but if someone incarcerated feels so inclined to save the taxpayers' money....let em have at it.

Cant wait to see what the GBI

Cant wait to see what the GBI end results are... You can clearly see marks on his neck in his booking photo. Could he have died of complications due to something that happened during his arrest? If that is the case its a shame the chronicle and other publications are slandering this mans name. Even publishing a photo of a man that supposedly hung himself with bruises on his neck is pretty low knowing that friends & family of the victim will be viewing it. Praying that the truth prevails and that the family finds peace.

I think we've seen his

I think we've seen his picture and the story enough in this newspaper. There are children left behind and family. Let's move on Augusta Chronicle. Three days of this is enough. Granted he was troubled for whatever reason but he is gone and the family who are the real victims in his death need some relief.
