Two men arrested, charged in beating

  • Follow Crime & courts

Two men were arrested after they beat a man with a tire iron while using racial slurs Saturday night, police said.

Richmond County sheriff's Sgt. Blaise Dresser said Jonathan Eubanks, 20, and Jeremy Jaynes, 24, were each charged with aggravated assault after they hit 40-year-old Jonathan Hoskins, who is black, in the head with a lug wrench and fractured his skull.

The suspects, who are described as white , were chasing another black man, who they claim threw something at their car near the corner of Third and Greene streets, a sheriff's report said.

The victim heard them using racial slurs against the man they were chasing, who was also black, and asked a man sitting in a van what was going on.

Later, Eubanks and Jaynes returned to the van, saw the victim, and allegedly began using racial slurs against him.

One of the suspects then hit him in the head. The victim was taken to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital for treatment and is expected to recover, police said.

Two rowdies going around

Two rowdies going around beating up ANYONE, regardless of color, is unacceptable. If the punks will hit a black man, they'll hit a white man, or woman. In today's world rumor of them using racial slurs mean they'll get a "hate crime" charge, as though a tire iron in the head would indicate any other kind of crime.

Thier charges should be more

Thier charges should be more than aggravated assault since they used a tire iron.

can't we just all get along?

can't we just all get along? I know it will never happen. But just a thought. This world is sick. Regardless of race, we are all human.

All crimes are hate crimes.

All crimes are hate crimes. Treating it differently just because they used a racial slur is ridiculous.

If it would have been 2 black

If it would have been 2 black guys that beat a white man and yelled racial slang the news paper would not even have bothered to print the story. But as usual they seem to bash the whites and not all the black folk committing crime all over town. As usual the Augusta Chronical is playing the race card.

If Eubanks and Jaynes are not

If Eubanks and Jaynes are not lying and someone did throw something at their car, and hit the car, then I'm all for beating the thrower on the head with a tire iron. But attacking an innocent man is wayyy outta line and I'm glad these guys got caught for that.

As for the thrower, I became a big fan of vigilantism when my truck was vandalized just two blocks from a police station. If the police can't protect us just two blocks from their HQ, how can they protect us elsewhere? We should be able to enact our own kind of justice on anyone who commits crimes against us. A cracked skull for vandalizing someone's vehicle seems like a fair deal to me.

I'm with you on that one,

I'm with you on that one, Chillen. It's not right to have a separate hate crimes designation for some situations and exclude others. There are plenty of hate crimes that are black on white for instance, that will never be reported or tried and sentenced as such. My opinion is all crimes are hate crimes.

In response to daphne3520 u

In response to daphne3520 u need to wake up and read the crime articles in the Chronical, very seldom do they give a description of a black man that commits a crime against a white man. But when a white man commits a crime against a black look out it will be in the paper for days. And do you ever see any hate crime charges on the blacks that are always beating white people when they are commiting crimes against them. NO !!!!! Hate Crime statues on the books should go both ways, not for just for the protection of the black man.

They committed a violent

They committed a violent crime against another human being and therefore should be locked up for quite some time (although based on our current judicial system, unlikely).

There is no such thing (or shouldn't be) as a hate crime because the police and courts are unable to read anyones thoughts and we don't need the thought police.

LOCK UP ALL Violent Criminals of any race, all the time, every time for a very long time, period.

hey daph, tell me what kool-aid i need to stop drinking???? maybe you need to wake up and get your head out of the sand and look at the hypocracy, when a sitting commissioner takes money donated for charity and gives it to a city employee for bypass because she doen't know when to get up from the kitchen table (BTW, the city insurance would pay for it if it was health related not just don't want to stop eating) and the so-called black leaders march in protest shouting "racism" but turn a bling eye to the on-going black on black murders, crime, assaults, the exploding teenage/out of wedlock-single parent pregnancies/household, high drop-out rates-low test scores that is occurring on a daily basis in the black community what do YOU need to wake up, or are you one who enables and/or look to make excuses or blame "the man or racism" for what is going on......

Excuse me charliemanson. But

Excuse me charliemanson. But some people take pride in their southern heritage. It's not a racial thing at all. Although you are free to delude yourself all you like.

I always thought the use of

I always thought the use of "hate crime" when describing a situation was to give more detail on "why?"

I would assume if there were a pattern of hate crimes where whites were hurting blacks and saying racially offensive things, then they could rightfully assume there could be a racist organization brewing in the community that could be dangerous to a specific demographic/area.

Same reason they like to find out what a serial killer prefers killing, so they can catch him in the act.

I'm probably wrong in its usage though since I never hear of a black person committing a hate crime on a white person even though it has happened and for racial reasons as well.

You all are right in you own

You all are right in you own little ways. BUT, I agree with the NON attn the black on black crimes are getting here in Augusta. These guys are killing each other, it is all over the news for a day they catch the murderer(s) bury the victim and it goes away. Maybe they need to do something a lil different than their doing huh!?
