Waynesboro teen held in cousin's shooting

Victim, 14, remains in critical condition

  • Follow Crime & courts

Waynesboro, Ga., police arrested a 16-year-old boy after his 14-year-old cousin was shot in the head early Sunday in a disturbance that followed a teen party.

Waynesboro police charged the unnamed older teen with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Investigator Gene Boseman said.

The victim was in critical condition in intensive care at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he was airlifted after being stabilized at a Waynesboro hospital, Boseman said.

The 14-year-old Waynesboro boy shouldn't have been out because he had been under a curfew since his recent release from the Augusta Regional Youth Detention Center, Boseman said.

Police had ordered a teen party at a public senior citizens' facility to disperse after determining it had inadequate security.

Boseman said the crowd of mostly teenagers then moved to Pecan Grove, an area of modular homes.
The party was ordered to disperse again, then headed to Magnolia Avenue, then to an area at the intersection of Cedar and Ward streets in Waynesboro, where the shooting took place about 1 a.m.
The suspect's charges might be upgraded if the victim's condition worsens, and additional arrests might be pending in the incident, Boseman said.

Agents of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are assisting Waynesboro police with the investigation.

WAYNESBORO, Ga. -- UPDATE:

WAYNESBORO, Ga. --
UPDATE: 10:44 A.M.

Investigators were called out to the city of Waynesboro after a 14-year old was found shot in the head.

We're told the shooting happened around 1 a.m. Sunday morning near Cedar Lane and Ward Street.

26 News has learned dispatch received a call about a fight that started between teens at a Senior Citizen Center. A teen party was being held at the center. The argument moved down the street to Cedar Lane and Ward and that's when the shots were heard.

Investigators tell us the 14-year old was airlifted to MCGHealth. He's now on life support.

GBI and Waynesboro police are questioning witnesses, trying to figure out what happened.

My prayers are with family....

Sounds like he should not

Sounds like he should not have been released in the first place. Supposed to be released to a responsible person. Parent was not acting responsible. Lock her up. I'm betting it's a her.

But they both had deprived childhoods. It isn't their fault.

Noe for my real opinion. If you are old enough to commit an adult crime be prepared to accept adult punishment. Up to and including the ultimate high.

Guns are too available in our

Guns are too available in our society. State with permissive gun laws have the highest number of firearm shootings and the victims are someone the shooter knows instead of a stranger.

Gun violence is the second-leading cause of injury-related fatalities in the US after car accidents. In Alaska, Maryland and Nevada as well as D.C., firearm death rates in 1998 exceeded those for car accidents. (CDC & Natnl. Vital Statistics Report, 1999)

jones255, I bet your post

jones255, I bet your post doesn't stay long. Mine was pulled when I said someone was nuts but I do agree with you that the tightest law would not prevent this. I have 5 pistols and a rifel and they are never pulled out. If I had children they would be in a fingerprint safe. Where were the parents at 1 am?

@WW -- You are right. My post

@WW -- You are right. My post was pulled. @gaspringwater -- permissive gun laws did not cause the problem. Worthless low-life thieves caused the problem. Lack of parental responsibility on BOTH sides caused this tragedy. I don't know where the parents were, but they were not keeping their thumbs on their "little cherubs".

gaspring, get a grip. If the laws regarding MURDER don't register in someone's mind, what makes you think that yet another gun law will help? Or do you think that passing new laws will magically make all the illegal guns in the hands of criminals disappear? You've already said that anyone who wants a gun can get one, right? Well, guess what? They are NOT getting them from anyone following the many, many gun laws already in place, and passing new ones won't stop anyone in the future.

Waynesboro is not a peaceful,

Waynesboro is not a peaceful, quaint little town anymore. Crime there is outrageous considering the relatively small population. Their local newspaper is online, but without a subscription you can't access the latest edition, just the ones prior to this week's.
The police there are undermanned and overwhelmed, and the kids attending these 'parties' know it. It's a shame that this boy died because nobody made sure the the little thug that shot him was home where he belonged.
It's a very sad situation, but not surprising at all if you know anything about W'boro these days.

"Did You Know? Every hour in

"Did You Know? Every hour in America, four people are killed by firearms." This statement is not true - what firearms kill people? NONE - only when they are in the hands of irresponsible people who pull a trigger does a death happen. Guns can be banned, not legally according to our constitution, but those who are criminals will get them anyway. Where in the world did a 16 year old get a gun? He surely did not come by it legally - and why did he take it to a party? Now two lives are over, one of them will go trial or some attorney will try to plead him out (which should NEVER be allowed in cases like this) and if found guilty he will sit in jail at taxpayers' expense for about five years unless he is tried as an adult. It's a never ending cycle that can only be broken at home and that is not likely to happen.

Regardless what our resident anti gun poster has to say, this is a tragic incident regardless if the kid was suppose to be home or not.
Waynesboro is a small town with nothing to do! So on a Friday or Saturday night, they are cruising the parking lots, hanging out at the park, and yes, up to no good. This could have happened no matter what time it was, and I feel bad for the kid.
Will not make comment on the parenting or lack thereof.

The illegal market in guns

The illegal market in guns lies directly “downstream” from the legal market. Almost without exception, every illegal gun in the United States began its life as a legal product, manufactured or imported by a company licensed by the federal government and sold by a licensed dealer. The firearm is bought by a 'law abiding' citizen. 30-40% of all crime handguns traced by the federal government were sold brand-new by a licensed dealer less than three years earlier.

Just as every gun began its

Just as every gun began its life as a legal gun, every child born is pure, it is good, it is equal to the child lying next to it, and then parenting or lack of it steps in. Therein lies the demise. gaspringwater, you are so much in the statistics of everything, what is the percentage of crime in the democrat neighborhoods versus those in the Republican neighborhoods? Maybe a good start in righting the wrongs (criminal activities) would be taking guns away from democrats.
