Accused sex offender released on bond

  • Follow Crime & courts

An Evans man charged with molesting a 15-year-old girl was granted a $25,000 bond Friday.

Donald Helinski, of the 800 block of Brighton Circle, is accused of having sex with his stepdaughter's friend.

Helinski's attorney argued that his client had no prior arrests and that the relationship was an isolated incident that arose because of the victim's friendship with his stepdaughter.

Judge William Fleming granted bond but ordered Helinski not to have contact with any children, even his own.

Fleming, like Overstreet,

Fleming, like Overstreet, doesn't feel sex crimes are actionable. The bond was a "token" to keep the press off his sorry ... self.

Its called a constitutional

Its called a constitutional right. Pretrial detention is not meant to be punishment
It is meant to make sure the accused comes to court and to protect the public if that is necessary. The judge ruled that he was not a threat. So bond was appropriate
. If he is found guilty then lock him up.

Brighton Circle is in

Brighton Circle is in Columbia County and the La Quinta is in Richmond County. So why was he not charged in both counties?

"Its called a constitutional

"Its called a constitutional right" - of which constitution are you speaking? It certainly is NOT the constitution of the United States because nowhere will you find that a person who is even accused of a serious crime such as this felony is guaranteed bond. This judge has put himself in quite a precarious position now because if any other incident occurs with this man the judge will be on the hook.

Helinski's attorney argued that his client had no prior arrests and that the relationship was an isolated incident that arose because of the victim's friendship with his stepdaughter
How absurd is THAT? What kind of friendship with a stepdaughter gives a man the right to have sex with the friend? Attorneys with clients like him who try to get that client OFF need to have whomever gives them a license take a hard look - nowhere does the article even IMPLY innocence. Bad decision - remember these kinds of things when the judge is up for re-election. Whatever happened to being tough on crime...So exactly how can this man have NO interaction with children if he lives in a community, goes to a store, has a job or any other social activity? Better for the community to have him safely tucked away and have a speedy trial,if such a thing exists any more.

All judges except federal

All judges except federal judges have to stand for election so don't forget these kinds of things between now and the time that the judge wants your vote and tells you how anti-crime he is.

Just hold your breath and

Just hold your breath and wait for a chance to vote against this judge. That way the world will be less one more person who thinks he knows what he is talking about, but really doesn't.

I thought Brighton Circle was

I thought Brighton Circle was in South Augusta off Lumpkin Rd and not in Evans. He will get his day in court and so will the girl. Even people accused of murder, killing someone while drunk driving, rape and robbery get bonds. The judge does what the laws of the state say.

I think that Fleming should

I think that Fleming should have to do time if this pervert commits another crime while on the street.
