An arrest report says Richmond County sheriff's Deputy Mathew Sides forced a woman, 22, to disrobe, and allow him to touch her to avoid being arrested.

A Richmond County sheriff's deputy was arrested Tuesday on a charge that he coerced a woman to take her clothes off so he wouldn't take her to jail.

Deputy Mathew Sides is accused of sexual battery against a person in custody in connection with the Oct. 9 incident.

An arrest report states that Sides stopped the car around 3 a.m. in the parking lot of a business in the 2800 block of Thomas Lane. Sides, who was in uniform, made the 22-year-old woman and her boyfriend get out of the car, looked at her ID and told her the only way to avoid going to jail is "to get naked," a report states.

The woman took her clothes off, and Sides touched her inner thigh, according to a report. Sides then allowed the couple to leave. The incident was reported, and the investigation was turned over to the criminal investigation division.

Sides, who has been a deputy in Richmond County for a little more than two years, surrendered to the sheriff's office Tuesday morning on the warrant. Col. Gary Powell said Sheriff Ronnie Strength would make a statement after Sides goes before the review board this morning.

If the officer did not do

If the officer did not do this, and there is a chance that he did not, I hope the truth will come out. Someone that would tell a lie about something like this should be punished severely.

The scenario belongs on the

The scenario belongs on the dumbest crooks program. Who knows what was going on in this deputy's mind at the time anyway. As for the time lapse from Oct 9 to Oct 16 it seems that the Oct 16 date is when the report was made public. The police do not always make reports known on the day of receipt, but will do a preliminary investigation prior to notifying the public. Evidently, they found the allegations worthy of further investigation, which does not look good for the deputy. Makes you wonder if there were other incidents without a witness. As for committing this type of crime, maybe he likes a threesome or at least thought the boyfriend would appreciate the power he held over the couple. He's a jerk to say the least!

He must have done it; women

He must have done it; women never lie about these things. Can he prove he didn't? There you have it then.

Time for the R&R rope!

There you have it, dstewart,

There you have it, dstewart, there were 3 people involved in the incident- which you would know if you read the story. Because men never lie about those things either, right?

"The incident was reported,

"The incident was reported, and the investigation was turned over to the criminal investigation division."

And, based on their investigation, he was arrested. There was probable cause to think that a crime occurred.

Read that part too, dstewart.

Corgimom, no where in this

Corgimom, no where in this article does it say that based on the investigation he was arrested. When a crime occurrs and I'm sure because there were two witnesses, a warrant was issued for his arrest. The details and truth have to be worked out later. Do you know how many times someone has been arrested only to prove their innocense but we never hear about that. All we care about is, he looks guilty, he was arrested, thereforth he's guilty and we move on to the next story. The officer surrendered to the sheriff's office because there was a warrant issued.....that is not an admission or proof of guilt. It's called standard procedure.

If after all the facts are investigated and hopefully this man will be found innocent, nothing will be publish to declare his found innocense and no chance to change some of your first impression of this young officer as a scumbag. If he's found guilty, then treat him just like any other average citizen and terminate his employment.

He had her get naked just to

He had her get naked just to touch her inner thigh? Bizarre. While it may be true, it certainly sounds less than credible. What makes me hesitant to believe this young woman's tale is the fact that her boyfriend was present at the time. I find it hard to believe that he would stand by and let this happen, or at the very least, you know he most likely had a cell phone, why not record it for evidence? The police officer could not have been ogling the girl and keeping an eye on the boyfriend at the same time.
If it is true, he should be punished accordingly. If it isn't true, this young woman and her boyfriend should be punished accordingly. Either way, one of these people involved is a very disturbed individual.

Count me in as one who

Count me in as one who suspects the couple made the story up. I would be interested in knowing what traffic violation caused him to pull the car over.

They're lying. They're hoping

They're lying. They're hoping for a lucrative settlement from the county. Gosh, some of you people are so naive. You'll believe anything. This couple was probably making out, he told them to move along, and now they want some cash. End of story.

How ironic that a person will

How ironic that a person will suggest that all young women have lost their virginity, but declare otherwise to make their dads feel good then defend a woman who would disrobe in front of her boy friend to keep from being punished for another violation. Bribery comes in different shapes and sizes.

I'm going with F GAP based on

I'm going with F GAP based on experience. But too little information to sort it out completely. I can't see a REAL boyfriend standing by while this happened, let alone as an officer just "touched her thigh". That's not a real man, let alone boyfriend material. Is there a possibility she was already disrobed when the officer approached? Lord knows I saw enough naked bodies in 20 years in LE. It was usually "get dressed & move along" time. But there's no defining of a traffic stop or of a stop & check in the article. It's too vague since the "stop" was in a parking lot. Leaves a lot of wiggle room when an officer tells someone to move along & there's no report. In today's litigous society, it doesn't surprise me to see articles like this. Hope the truth comes out.

First, who's out at 3am in a parked car?

Next, the officer tells the woman, in front of the boyfriend, to disrobe to avoid jail?

Next, she does it? And the boyfriend is OK with this?

Sounds credible to me.

A report was filed by two people, a week later, and a warrant was issued. Wow, I'm questioning the judge that signed the warrant. A week old open can of tuna doesn't smell this fishy

Certainly, we were not there, but the more accurate picture involves the officer catching the two, already disrobed, tells them to move on, and they concoct a story to raise a little operating capital. I may be proven wrong, but I'll go with that story.

Y'all need to get a grip.

Y'all need to get a grip. This is a family newspaper, what do you think "inner thigh" means?

I would also like follower to read the story again. Nowhere in the story does it say that the report was filed October 19th. You have been watching too much "Law and Order", where an investigation takes 20 minutes.

This happens more often than people think, especially with poor or minorities.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=94481

But here's what happened in Charlotte-

"Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Marcus Jackson, 25, was charged with sexual battery, second-degree sex offense, extortion, kidnapping, indecent exposure and two counts of felonious restraint. He was being held in lieu of bond totaling $360,000 ahead of a court hearing Thursday, according to jail records. The records did not indicate whether he had an attorney, and a jail spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking information."

The couple involved were two illegal immigrants- because he figured they wouldn't tell on him.

Follower- Here's what I read,

Follower- Here's what I read, you must have read something different-

"An arrest report states that Sides stopped the car around 3 a.m. in the parking lot of a business in the 2800 block of Thomas Lane."

The car wasn't parked until Sides pulled them over. Perhaps in your life you have never, ever, ever been riding in a car with someone at 3 am, but some people do.

"How ironic that a person

"How ironic that a person will suggest that all young women have lost their virginity"

I don't think that's ironic, I think that is 100% untrue, because I have NEVER, EVER said or even SUGGESTED that all young women have lost their virginity. Post it up where I said that, because I NEVER have said that.

I know the difference between ALL and MOST, usafvet- do you? Because 95% is MOST. It is not ALL.

How sad that you feel the need to say something totally untrue about me. Is that ironic, too?

Everybody read my posts, and yours too- and they know the truth, just as I do.
