An arrest report says Richmond County sheriff's Deputy Mathew Sides forced a woman, 22, to disrobe, and allow him to touch her to avoid being arrested.

A Richmond County sheriff's deputy was arrested Tuesday on a charge that he coerced a woman to take her clothes off so he wouldn't take her to jail.

Deputy Mathew Sides is accused of sexual battery against a person in custody in connection with the Oct. 9 incident.

An arrest report states that Sides stopped the car around 3 a.m. in the parking lot of a business in the 2800 block of Thomas Lane. Sides, who was in uniform, made the 22-year-old woman and her boyfriend get out of the car, looked at her ID and told her the only way to avoid going to jail is "to get naked," a report states.

The woman took her clothes off, and Sides touched her inner thigh, according to a report. Sides then allowed the couple to leave. The incident was reported, and the investigation was turned over to the criminal investigation division.

Sides, who has been a deputy in Richmond County for a little more than two years, surrendered to the sheriff's office Tuesday morning on the warrant. Col. Gary Powell said Sheriff Ronnie Strength would make a statement after Sides goes before the review board this morning.

There's not enough bad that

There's not enough bad that can happen to this person. How did he make it into the department in the first place? The amount and kind of inappropriate conduct that has come to light with deputies over the past few years is enough to make one question the adequacy of their trainee/employee screening methods.

Maybe for the first time ever, I have to echo Fiat's sentiments. Augusta's finest aren't looking real fine. And, that's a crying shame.

Be interesting to see how far the charge goes or if his job gets him lighter treatment so he avoids the sex offender title.

I'm suspicious of this story.....It seems like a very strange thing to do when the boyfriend was there as a witness. Remember, this is
America and a person is innocent until proven guilty.

Where is boruca1968 talking

Where is boruca1968 talking his trash about rogue deputies now? I know the RCSO does NOT do mental evaluation on those they hire. May be a time to start! Of course, Ronnie might lose some of his cronies.

doesn't it seem odd that he

doesn't it seem odd that he would do something like this with a witness?
look at his pic. looks lost and lonely. innocent until proven guilty. further questioning of the accusers by the professional investigators should reveal the truth. they instintively know when someone is lying. if the accusers are guilty of a lie, jail. if the cop is guilty, jail. this case can not lead to probation. that would be a terrible example.

Certainly he was not dumb enough to do this in front of the boyfriend and with his uniform on? Definitely makes me wonder if the couple is lying.

Two witnesses against a cop

Two witnesses against a cop will get a suspension and an investigation. If he's not found to be guilty, what will the couple have gained?
Does this cop and this couple have a history beyond the one stop?

The City of Charlotte just

The City of Charlotte just settled a lawsuit for the exact same thing- but it was true. Four other credible women came forward to report the same thing had happened with that particular police officer at different times.

If he truly did this, more women will come forward. They don't do it just once.

It's about abuse of power and control. It's a form of rape.

Share this with your teens and young adult children...remind them that hanging out at all hours of the morning can often run into all kinds of trouble...there is no excuse, but there is also good reason to do things that can avoid putting ourselves in vulnerable positions to deal with creeps like this.

I would think that a

I would think that a polygraph was administered before charges were filed. If not, the investigators know something that isn't being mentioned in the story. LEO are just people. Some good, some bad. The same holds true for veterans, firefighters, etc. Too often on this thread, folks assume that all cops, veterans, etc. are somehow, b/c of their job, beyond reproach. Many cops are dirty when hired and many turn dirty after exposure to the " Blue Code". Power corrupts. I hope that justice prevails. Severe sentences should be meted out for public officials that violate their oath!
