A pickup traveled 49 feet in the air early Thursday morning after it struck an embankment on U.S. Highway 1, a North Augusta Public Safety report shows.
The truck's driver, Michael Brantley, 35, of Modoc, S.C., was trying to get away from a Richmond County deputy who tried to pull him over at Gordon Highway and Old Savannah Road, a report states.
The deputy stopped the pursuit at the state line, but Brantley continued at a high rate of speed into South Carolina, according to a report. The truck began spinning across lanes and uprooted two trees before it hit an embankment outside Greg's Gas Plus and launched 49 feet and 4 inches into the air.
Brantley was thrown from the truck as it rolled and was taken to the hospital with a broken leg and head injury, a report states. His passenger, Laura Smith, 21, of Warrenville, was treated for cuts and scrapes and an abdominal injury.
Smith was cited for a seatbelt violation; Brantley was charged with DUI, driving on a suspended license and improper tag display.
Did someone really measure the 49 feet 4 inches? Couldn't it just have been 49 feet.
or "approximately 50 feet"? How about 49 feet, 4 and 13/32 inches?
and yes, this person needs to be under the jail
Always wear your seatbelt when fleeing from a police chase.
Jail does not fix anyone...this man needs Jesus in his heart and life cause one can get whatever they want in jail...
wlightnin42 and grinder48 I thought the exact same thing! Was this like X-Games and someone was standing on the embankment with a laser measuring their "Big Air"? And how do you figure where to measure on a flipping car? Do you measure from the wheels, the roof, or the center of gravity? LOL
I didn't notice a charge of speeding, evading arrest, public endangerment or a slew of other charges. Bet the passenger will get more penalty than the driver, especially after we taxpayers buy his defense.
mbaynahum58, Brantley might be a "born again" speeder!!!
I was thinking the same thing ruudvonbaron, how long into a high speed chase would you have to be to decide to fasten your seat belt?
Hey, just be thankful it's accurate and written in proper English!
And just be thankful that no one was killed.
If only non-Christians drive drunk, then the CSRA is in a heap of trouble.
35 with a 21 yr. old. If he makes it out of the hospital he may have another problem!!!!!
