Holiday weekend saw increase in speeding

  • Follow Crime & courts

By the end of Labor Day weekend, motorists were drinking less and speeding home more.

According to a news release, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office issued 17 DUI citations during the holiday weekend, 14 of them Saturday. By Monday, DUIs had dropped to zero and speeding citations spiked to 130. There were 174 speeding tickets issued all weekend, the sheriff's office said.

ICL, they had about 15 cars

ICL, they had about 15 cars out on Bobby Jones doing "insurance rate adjustments." They could get these results anytime they wanted to, because the traffic was the same density as always.

Yet they only "Step Up

Yet they only "Step Up Enforcement" on the holiday weekends. Maybe they just put all cops on mandatory overtime on holiday weekends to make it fair for everyone, and the by-product is more traffic citations.

I am not saying that they

I am not saying that they shouldn't. I believe the message that is trying to be conveyed is that speeding/drinking and driving is not limited to holiday weekends and maybe patrols should do something like this more often.

So is the county happier that

So is the county happier that they get more speeding ticket money or upset that they get less DUI money?

They tacitly approve of

They tacitly approve of speeding on Bobby Jones by not enforcing the speed limit 300 days a year. Then they hold a holiday massacre 4 or 5 days a year like last Monday when they had 6 or 8 cars pulled over at a time within a 1/2 mile stretch between Gordon Hwy and Wrightsboro Rd. If it was dangerous speeding on Monday then it was dangerous speeding the other 300 days and these "dog and pony" shows do nothing to increase safety. It was like watching a herd of wildebeests crossing a river in Africa. The crocodiles got a few but most of them didn't slow down a bit.

I agree Taylor B. In reality

I agree Taylor B.
In reality with all the set ups they had, there should've been more speeding tickets. They werent out looking for DUI's with their radars.
