  • Follow Crime & courts

A former teacher and band director has been indicted by a grand jury on charges related to child pornography in McDuffie County.

FILE: Billy W. Hobbs
THOMSON – A former teacher/band director has been indicted by a grand jury on charges related to child pornography in McDuffie County.

Grand jurors returned a two-count indictment charging Philip Bradley Pirkle with one count of violation of the computer electronic pornography and child exploitation prevention act, court records reveal. The second charge accuses Pirkle of sexual exploitation of children.

Pirkle, 32, was initially taken into custody in February by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at his home. He later was released on $50,000 bail.

I am not normally a great fan

I am not normally a great fan of violence, but in the case of pedophiles I make an exception. Especially pedophiles who are teachers, ministers, counselors, etc. Put him naked in the lodge with all the women of the tribe each armed with 1/2" knives and allow them to slowly hack him to death.

source - you are waaaaay off

source - you are waaaaay off base with this one. The fact that he had this online relationship with her in the first place is out of line. We find pedophiles, rapists, and even serial killers who have been shown to commit these crimes without the knowledge of a loving spouse and who have convinced the community how much they love their spouses.

As a teacher, I will not "friend" a student on my Facebook page and will not even look at theirs. The only correspondence I will do with my students concerns needed school supplies, homework, projects and the students accomplishments.

i have to admit i am torn by

i have to admit i am torn by this entire ordeal. knowing brad personally, i know him to be a fine teacher and person; knowing him according to this case, he shows a side of himself that is far more sinister and dark than i would ever suspect. is it possible for a person to make a "mistake" of this nature? i realize that he may be immature at times, but he has always seemed to be very passionate about his work and considerate in his dealings with others. i, too, would like to see the online communication: apparently it is strong enough for a grand jury to choose to indict him, so there must be material beyond simply inappropriate comments. i am not excusing his behavior at all and i agree that the child, due to her age, cannot be blamed; i simply struggle to throw brad into the garbage bin until i know all the facts.

calm down, wag, i certainly

calm down, wag, i certainly am not defending, condoning, or otherwise excusing brad's behavior. i stop short of wishing that he burn in hell if he is guilty - by the way, he is innocent until proven guilty - but i certainly expect to make up my own mind when i have the opportunity to read the online communication between brad and the girl. i realize this is a very emotional issue for many people; i assure you it is also emotional for those of us who know brad and his family. i don't know the girl involved, but i am especially worried for her since this situation is likely going to affect her for the rest of her life; brad is certainly guilty of behavior that demonstrates the ultimate in stupidity as a teacher by putting a child in a position to be harmed by public scrutiny.

The problem, "the_source", is

The problem, "the_source", is that people are naturally fools; especially in this digital age. We tend to immediately react and speak based on our feelings related to what we read and hear.

My father had a saying that "Don't believe anything that you hear (or read), and only half of what you see." Generally, he is right. Especially when it comes to what we read and hear in the news. William Randolph Hearst replied to an employee: "You furnish the pictures and I'll furnish the war." In other words, the news organizations take facts and may twist them (sometimes unintentionally) into a story that will sell papers or a network.

They're in it for the money and power, not for presenting facts to the public. Until I have the facts sitting in front of me, I'm not going to praise or condemn someone on the basis of a possibly prejudice article in the paper or on the news.

Here's a guy who might be guilty, or might not be, but on the basis of what they read in the paper, folks are already getting the knives out to kill him.

When we react to something in the news, we give the news source power to control and alter the course of our lives. I want that power over myself to be mine. It's mine to give to whom I choose.

C.S. Lewis wrote a book called "That Hideous Strength" in which the "bad guys" use the news media to manipulate the public into believing what them want them to believe.

Either we're fools for reacting to something we see in the news, or we can be wise and gather all of the facts that we can before passing judgment on something.

Having been in the church for most of my life, I've seen what people can do to others simply by using words. Lives ruined and destroyed because someone wanted power or control.

To paraphrase an old quote, "There are more horse rear ends in the world than there are horse front ends."

Which end we are can be easily determined in this digital age by going online to read what we post in response to the "news".

I've determined that for myself, as much as it is possible for me to ensure, I want to be the front end of the horse.

@Casting_Fool, you are

@Casting_Fool, you are correct. People like WAG are now ready to have ME arrested and convicted as a pervert even though all I asked for was for Pirkle's online communications to be published to help see both sides of this story. It is people like WAG who blindly followed the crowd and burned witches in Salem, participated in the Nazi party's atrocities, well, you get the idea.

It is very dangerous to blindly follow anyone or anything without asking yourself "Why?". It is especially dangerous to blindly follow our news media which everyone knows can be easily skewed. This is a phenomenon known as "social proof" in which people start having only one view because others took that same view without any other rationale. I like to call it the "lemming theory" and this element of human behavior plagues us in many aspects of our lives by contributing to stock market crashes to even wanting to convict someone like Pirkle without due process of the law. Remember, folks, our laws here in the US say "innocent til proven guilty", not "burn him online and let him share a jail cell with anyone who questions our convictions".

Bringing the issue of child molestation to the forefront and actively fighting it is a good development in our "Information Age". It has been popularized by websites and even the "To Catch a Predator" TV shows by Dateline and is now a huge bandwagon to jump on. Supporting this issue is necessary to protect our children but, unfortunately, there will always be people who try to give merely the appearance of actively supporting it, more so to give themselves social validity rather than to protect our children. I put politicians and people like WAG into the first group. I am more inclined to listen to a rational person like momster59, who also disagreed with my previous post, than someone as easily influenced by our media and as emotional as WAG about this issue.

As I step back and read these comments allowed by the AC, not just those on the Pirkle story but on other stories as well, I just find it fascinating since it gives me new glimpses into human behavior every time I read them.

I know this dude. We both

I know this dude. We both graduated from the same college and lived in the same dorm. He was always a nice guy. I don't see him being a sexual predator but I can buy him going too far in a relationship with a student though. He did always seem to be a little on the slow side in comprehending things.

Guess it's true, guilty until

Guess it's true, guilty until proven innocent--just as it is in Europe. Granted, IF the man did view the video put on by the girl, who some say was naked as a jaybird, then she also should be charged for indecent exposure and enticement as well as producing kiddie porn. I do not condone what may have occurred but I sure want both sides of the story before handing out a verdict. There is more than one law-breaker in this case and appropriate charges should be brought up on both.

You people are nuts! Like I

You people are nuts! Like I said it does not matter what the girl did. He is the adult and her teacher. He broke a trust. We send our kids to expecting them to be safe not to be molested by a pervert! It is people like you that keep sexual abuse a secret. And emotional and passionate about this you dang right I am. Tell you what leave your kids with the pervert! And I was passionate about this subject way before there was a tv show about it. Don't really know of anything that I am more passionate about! Get your heads out of the sand people. Oh Malone in NA was innocent also...ha ha not so been doing it for years and I hope he burns in hell for the lives he ruined. I believe there is a special place in hell for these perverts... Lives are ruined by these evil people and the kids will never be the same.

"WAG" wrote "It is people like you that keep sexual abuse a secret. "

How dare you accuse me and others of doing something so reprehensible. My guess is that you were raped as a child and have never come to grips with the terrible situation that you experienced.

As a young child, I was raped for three years by a guy my family trusted. For a long while I hated him and would have gladly contributed to his death. As I got older, I realized that I could either get on with my life, or stay crippled by this guy's act.

I don't know the specifics of your situation, but it gets really old listening to your rants about what this article stated and about what it did not.

You also stated that "Lives are ruined by these evil people..." Really? You're not kidding? Wow, I would never have realized that salient point. [sarcasm]

Lives are also ruined by good-intentioned people who go off on someone who is innocent until proven guilty.

Maybe the guy is guilty as sin and an idiot to boot. But maybe he's not. It's up to the court to decide that, not us.

Kids today are participating in sexually-oriented adult acts and need to be taught that there are consequences for living like that. Who is stupid enough to send a naked picture or video of themselves to anyone over the Internet!? If it goes on the 'Net, it goes on forever. You can never get it back.

I'm a single guy (widowed) in his fifties with a cute little dachshund dog. Any wonder why I no longer walk her in public down at the river? It's not worth the risk that some idiot will mistakenly assume that I'm trolling for kids. So we miss out on the wonderful opportunity to enjoy River Walk, because of people like "WAG". Go figure...

14 may still be a child,

14 may still be a child, however, at 14 I believe kids do have a sense of what they are doing and whether it is right or wrong. Theres articles in the news now where 2 teenaged boys are accused of aggravated sodomy, and another where a kid in Dekalb County got a plea deal after a striptease in school. The teacher in that case was found innocent of deprivation charges. Now, the fact that I believe someone at the age of 14 does know right from wrong also does not absolve the adult parties involved of any and all wrongdoing either. My best friends daughter is a parent at age 15...do the math. It means she knew enough about sex to get herself pregnant.

Casting fool for your

Casting fool for your information I was never abused. But I have people close to me who have been . By their own father and she will never get over it. I am not saying he is guilty but why did he put himself in that position. He is an adult and a teacher. Futhermore as I stated before the child has no blame here. The key word here is"child". Her brain is not even completely developed....Please dont bame the child. That is why kids dont tell because we dont believe them. I hope this man is innocent but if he is not but I seriously doubt it. And yes I am passionate about this and will remain so. Somebody needs to get serious and passionate about child abuse and sexual abuse. Sorry if I offend someone but I stand by the child. Like I said leave your kids with him!

"I believe there is a special place in hell for these perverts... Lives are ruined by these evil people and the kids will never be the same."

"I am not saying he is guilty..."

Yes, you did. You labeled him as guilty through your comments. So what do we do when a kid falsely accuses a guy and he goes through hell because of some lies? Or an ex-wife decides to put the knife to her ex-husband and claims sexual abuse of the kids? That's why we have courts to determine these things.

This is a forum for people to let off steam, pontificate, and generally let the local community know our opinion and that we are all occasionally fools. It's not a soapbox for rousing people into hanging someone just because we personally believe that they deserve it.

It even draws others in and makes money for the paper. That's what papers do, make money for the owner. And in some cases, it's more important than accurately reporting the news.

If Philip did what they say he did, he was an idiot. All men look at porn and/or are obsessed with sex. All of us, even pastors and priests. It's even easier today than it was 10 years ago to view it.

You can watch TV, the movies, walk down the street in the summer (there's a reason why God advises modesty in public), watch sports (yes, Virginia, he's watching the cheerleaders in those skimpy costumes do their red light district act), or sit in front of a computer and use Google, eBay, or Wikipedia.

Sex is hardwired into our brains as men and it takes immense strength of character to resist the temptation to be sexually stupid and to set yourself up for the sort of trouble that Philip may have gotten himself into. If your man is staying sexually faithful to you, let him know how much you appreciate it!

There is a good reason why God mentioned in the Bible that it's a bad idea to go for more than short time without having marital intimacy (I Cor. 7:2-5.) He created man in the first place (if you believe that) and knows our limitations as His creation.

Look at the message that the media gives us about sex. You meet a woman, talk for five minutes and then have outrageously active sex with her. What?!

And thanks to the mentality that was birthed in the 60's that everything is beautiful in it's own way and that nothing is wrong between consenting adults, our kids today are being allowed and even encouraged to act like adults sexually. ("If it's okay for adults, it's okay for me.") Lady GaGa, Twilight, or Miley Cyrus, anyone?

From the few "facts" the paper has revealed, Philip may have been a complete idiot, and the 14 yo girl foolish. Whether or not Philip is guilty, his wife may be devastated by this incident and their lives and marriage may be ruined forever.

If the girl was acting in a promiscuous manner, she needs to change her behavior or she will probably get into trouble again. The court needs to investigate her part in this incident and make sure that she's not in danger of something like this happening again.

No one involved in this incident will ever be rid of the issue because it's been published on the 'Net. It will never go away. Just like what we comment here. It's forever, or until the Internet dies.

"WAG" I support the idea that someone is innocent until proven guilty. It's one of the bedrocks of our society. I also support the legal conviction and punishment of people who abuse kids. I have not once in my comments on this topic supported Philip or the girl. I've just stated that until there is proven guilt in this matter, we cannot judge whether or not Philip is guilty of the charges.

Men are hounded by sexual content in our society. It's everywhere and some men are weak and prone to do stupid stuff when it comes to sex. Other men are truly twisted and bent and sexually prey on others, especially children.

The court will decide whether or not Philip is guilty, which kind of person he is, and possibly sentence him to an appropriate punishment.

I wonder how many times in the past that someone felt that a person was guilty of something, and based on their personal feelings in the matter, started a campaign to discredit them. But the campaign got out of hand and the person was hanged, tarred and feathered, or just simply had their reputation ruined in a community. And no one ever proved their guilt.

God save me from making that mistake myself.

@Casting_Fool: You are

@Casting_Fool: You are wasting your time trying to present logic to WAG. As I said, this is a person who is more obsessed with obtaining social validity than protecting our children. This is evident in WAG's inconsistencies and emotional hysteria. One who is truly dedicated to the cause of fighting child molestation would use much more constructive methods, such as you do. But if you wish to continue playing with WAG, all the more power to you.

There's always hope, isn't

There's always hope, isn't there? I've seen lives ruined by false sexually-related accusations, and personally try to leave it up to the courts to determine guilt. They don't always get it right, but hopefully they get it right more often than not.

I just hate to see folks going off on a media report without checking the facts out for themselves.

"WAG" appears to have some real issues with sexual predators that seem to cause her (?) to react with anger and rashness. Just like "she'll" react to this reply. Watch.

According to "WAG's" replies, I (we) "post... crap defending this pervert...", that I'm (we're) "nuts", that I (we) "keep sexual abuse a secret", that I (we) would actually consider "leav[ing] [my/our] kids with the pervert", and that I (we) have our heads in the sand.

I'm (we're) already her next victim...

... and, hey! It's on the Internet forever! Huzzah!
