Williams appeals 9-year sentence

  • Follow Crime & courts

The Augusta insurance agent who admitted to stealing more than $1.7 million from his customers and family has appealed the decision by a federal court judge to sentence him to 108 months in prison.
In a letter filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court by his attorney, Pete Theodocion, Walt Williams will appeal the decision by U.S. District Court Judge J. Randal Hall to impose a stricter sentence than the one set by the court’s advisory guidelines. Those guidelines specify a range of 51 to 63 months for Williams’ crime.
During his sentencing, Hall said he intended to give Williams --whose single charge was for mail fraud stemming from a fake investment confirmation package he mailed in 2005 to a victim in Ocala, Fla. -- a strong sentence to make up for the fact that its unlikely Williams will ever be able to repay his victims.
The judge told the court that Williams’ effect on the community would be “. . .wide and deep and will be felt for decades.”
The appeal will go to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.
Beginning in May 1992, Williams took money from his longtime friends, customers and fellow churchgoers with promises that he would invest their funds safely and with better returns than a typical savings account.
Often, Williams, a former member of Warren Baptist Church, preyed upon his victim’s religious convictions to convince them to invest.
He received thousands of dollars from 16, mostly elderly, victims and instead used the money to fund gambling trips and other vacations.
Williams was also ordered to pay $500 a month toward restitution and will serve three years of supervised release.

What a travesty. He needs to

What a travesty. He needs to get out sooner so he can steal more people's money.

The people that he stole from- they will suffer for the rest of their lives.

Many of these people lost

Many of these people lost their retirement. They are no longer young and they worked during their younger years for this money and he maliciously took it. It wasn't just risk in an investment, he stole their money. He is asking for what? You have got to be kidding me? These people have nothing now. They made valuable use of their time and income and saved their money. Excuse me? He thinks 9 years is too long? Well, it took them more than 9 years to save that money. OMG! This is absolutely, insane!

My 85 year old Dad and 81

My 85 year old Dad and 81 year old Mother have worked with an investment counselor over the years to manage the savings that they made and saved over years. I would want to badly hurt someone who preyed on them. It is just unthinkable that this man could have stolen from people who called him a friend. I hope that he burns in HELL!!!!!

Come on Baron, this has

Come on Baron, this has nothing to do with Warren Baptist. There are no-goods in many organizations. This is where the word hypocrite is most appropriate. No one that I know of would approve his behavior and hope that the appeal falls on deaf ears. He should have to pay now, as well as answering to a much higher court.

You certainly can't judge a

You certainly can't judge a church by what one member does. This man should be put in jail, but work a job each day and spend the night and weekends in jail. This way he could pay more of the money back to the people he cheated.

getalife...This man should

getalife...This man should spend nights and weekends in jail? what? How about this man spend 24 hrs a day in PRISON. He stole over a million dollars from the people who trusted him. He used his position in a church to perpetrate his fraud. Take his house and everything he owns to pay restitution. If that is not enough have him spend his days making license plates at 3 cents each and keep him in prison until his debt is paid in full.

I am very curious, if Walter

I am very curious, if Walter Williams is so broke, how can he pay Theodocion $400.00 an hour for the appeal? Wouldn't he be better served to spend the $50,000 that it will cost for the appeal to give a good faith portion of that money back to the people that he stole from? At least that would cooberate his profession as a christian that he claims he is. This in no way is total restitution for his victims but at least it would be a start. Unfortunately, I do not think that he has any intent of making any restitution whatsoever to his victims, it is just another ploy to protect him and his wife's (ex -wife -HaHa)assets.
