Augusta judge rules in indigent case

ATHENS, Ga.  — A Superior Court judge has approved a consent order requiring the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council to appoint lawyers within 24 hours for poor people accused of crimes in the state's Northern Judicial Circuit when the public defender's office can't represent them because of a conflict.

The circuit includes Madison, Oglethorpe, Elbert, Franklin and Hart counties.

The consent order was approved Thursday by Augusta Circuit Superior Court Judge David Roper. It stems from a class-action lawsuit filed by indigent defendants more than a year ago after private lawyers refused to represent hundreds of clients because the state stopped paying them.

I disagree with the concept

I disagree with the concept that we the people have to supply defendants with legal support when it is we the people ,these defendants have offended. It the very least, if the defendants are proven guilty then they sould be required to pay restitution for legal services provided.

They, the inmates, are also

They, the inmates, are also we, the people. We the people pay for police and prosecutors to hit them with everything they've got; why shouldn't we the people also have the same access to resources for an adequate defense. All this "me first" mentality that permiates this country will be our ultimate downfall. We are ALL in this together.

Everyone who is a US citizen

Everyone who is a US citizen is entitled to adequate legal representation. I hate to think what it would be like if that were no longer true for us.
