Attempt to buy marijuana leads to robbery

A 38-year-old Augusta man told police that he was attacked and robbed Friday night after asking about buying marijuana.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, the victim said he was walking in the area of Laney-Walker Boulevard at New Savannah Road betweeen 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. when he approached man and asked him about buying marijuana from him.

The suspect then hit the victim in the face with his fist, which caused him to fall to the ground, the police report says. While the victim was on the ground, the man took $300 from his pocket and two gold chains from his neck. The gold chains were valued at a total of $1,400.

The victim said that he could not provide more information about the suspect but did wish to prosecute.

The reporting deputy said the victim had severe swelling to the left side of his eye and blood in and around the eye. The report was taken at Trinity Hospital.
