Ross Nipple: Police say 15-year-old has admitted lying about his role in the beating of 16-year-old Terence Reese on March 1 on Circular Drive. Reese's jaw surgery will take about six weeks to heal.

Ross Nipple, 15, of Richards Road, joins four other teens who face charges of aggravated battery and unlawful street gang activity, according to Richmond County Sheriff's Sgt. Blaise Dresser.

In interviews with investigators, Nipple admitted to formerly identifying with the local gang and subset of the infamous Bloods gang, Georgia Deadly Boys, or GDB.

The others arrested have said they are members of the "Apple Valley Posse," from the Apple Valley neighborhood off Mike Padgett Highway.

Police have said they think the teens were prowling the area around Circular Drive on March 1, looking for someone to attack, when they came upon Reese as he was walking his girlfriend home from school.

Reese, an honor roll student with a steady job at a local café, called his mother on his cell phone and said he feared he was about to get "jumped" by the other boys.

While he was still on the phone, the assailants attacked. Reese was treated for multiple broken bones in his face, police said.

Since then, he has been in a lot of pain but is keeping up with his studies, said his mother, Taanja Reese.

"It's a day-to-day battle," she said.

Terence Reese's jaw is wired shut and doctors have placed two titanium plates there to stabilize it. Doctors expect the bones to heal in about six weeks, his mother said. After that, she said, he would go back to school.

"He's not mad at these boys," she said. "He's holding his anger in a whole lot."

Over the last week and a half, police have made regular arrests of teens connected to the incident. Charged so far are Joshua Plowright, 14, Berten Blockett, 16, Mark Daniel Richard Musick, 14, and Brandon Mansson, 14. All are Butler students except Plowright, who attends Sego Middle School.

Dresser said Nipple was interviewed earlier in the investigation but was not charged. After receiving new information, investigators interviewed him again and he admitted to lying, Dresser said.

Nipple is now charged with making false statements.

Authorities said they now think a sixth person was involved in the beating.

What's Next

A second community gang awareness meeting will be held at Gracewood Community Center at noon Saturday, Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Mason announced Wednesday.

15 years should cool them off

15 years should cool them off and make them realize it is not "COOL" to be in a gang but it is "COOL" to be smart and have a good job with a good wife and a good family.

The sad part is when you look

The sad part is when you look at their ages, and now this picture of Nipple you an see that they are not as "Thugged out" as they want to be. Nipple is just a kid! Now he's facing some adult charges that will probably stay with him for the rest of his life. As sad as this is, though, all of them need to receive the maximum punishment allowed by law to be an example to others who might be thinking about joining a gang at an early age, or any age for that matter.

Angry, lost children looking

Angry, lost children looking to strike out at a society that does not "value human life". What kind of future do they have in this "sick society"? And we are confused and perplexed. Why do they act like "animals". These young people may be angry, but they are not stupid. The "only hope" they ever had has been stripped away. Mothers, fathers, ministers/priests, teachers, politicians and society in general "does not care about them". Our children are used in the "game of power/money and manipulation. What goes around, comes around. Chickens come home to roost.

American Society is slowly,

American Society is slowly, maybe not slowly, being reduced to the "base of human existence". Masticate, defecate, urinate and fornicate. Does this sound familiar? It is what "animals do". Will we return to living in a cave and grunting?

Why are these boys in gangs?

Why are these boys in gangs? They can't win a fight on their own so they join a gang. Gangs are for those that are chicken to fight on their own so they have to have friends join in to help them. Gangs are for wimps, wussies and or chickens how ever you feel to call them. Ones that can't fight for them selves.

I don't recall reading that

I don't recall reading that the juvenile judge has agreed to try these "children" as adults? I really wonder if they will veer see the inside of a prison given the state of our judicial system. And what is the status of the ones who have been arrested? Have they been released to their "parents" custody? Remember, the battle cry is "save the children" after all that statement is used to leverage money for everything else in society.

This is really sad; I'm

This is really sad; I'm looking at this kid and he's only 1 year older than my son; I just read a report that said locking kids up in juvenile facilities is just as bad as adult facilities because sexually assaults are just as frequent whether from older kids or guards; the report also said that guards know what's going on but don't intervene, report or discipline offenders. It'll be interesting to see how this case is handled; my prayers go out to Terence and his family; my prayers also go out to the boys who committed this crime that they'll be able to be rehabilitated and show other boys that gang life isn't what it's cracked up to be.

Betty, although I'm sure the

Betty, although I'm sure the parents of the assailants will have to compensate the victim and his family in some way, you can't say the blame for delinquent children rests squarely on the shoulders of their parents. You can't say for sure that the boys who did this were being raised by terrible parents. Just like I can't say for sure that they were being raised by the greatest parents ever. Kids join gangs for various reasons; some of which are to fit in, fear that they will be beaten if they don't join, having low self-worth, peer pressure, or because gangs are so prevelant that they think they don't have anything else to do. I'm no sociologist so those are just my personal suppositions. I'm not trying to defend the kids who did this, but I am saying that thinking their parents somehow went wrong somewhere or were just too lazy to nurture their kids isn't right. Sometimes the root causes of problems are not always what we would expect. I think there will be thorough investigations into each of these boys' homelife. Hopefully their defense attorneies won't try to use their upbringing to gain pity in court. Until then, let's not jump to conclusions about the parents. I'm sure you wouldn't want someone doing the same had your kids disappointed you so publicly as these kids have obviously done to their parents. I know I wouldn't. I should hope that my kids would be too afraid of disappointing me to do something like this. I talk to my kids, and they tell me about their dreams and aspirations. They don't want to miss out on their dreams, nor do they want me to be an Angry Dad!

Well, KJ, I suspect the apple

Well, KJ, I suspect the apple not falling far from the tree in this instance; this human detritus did not spontaneously generate. As for being compensated, I'm going to take a leap and guess unless Terrance's parents take EBT, they'll get the same thing the 'justice system' will give these thugs: Nothing.

@ Laguira I truely agree with

@ Laguira I truely agree with you these boys are scum for what they did. How brave are you when it is 5 to 6 against 1, that says alot for the group. However those young men, let me rephrase it children do not live in the Apple Valley subdivision, so for what reason they are claiming it I do not know. However these things are just not happening in the lower to middle class neighborhoods they are also happening in the upper classes neighborhoods as well. It just isn't being publized. A question and statement I posed to a friend. What happened to the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents, teachers, and the village it takes to raise these young people these days. Also the judicial system has stepped into the homes a little too much, with this child abuse thing. Some of us who are older remember the whippings that were dished out. Those in some cases were on the level of child abuse, but look how most of us turned out, for the most part we are productive and respectful citizens. To the parents of not just these children but all children lets take our children back from the system and instill some of the old ways into rearing the children because they are our future and if that is the case I rather time go backwards instead of forwards. We as a communinty need to do better by our children, because it still takes that village to raise a child.

@ barbrail: I totally agree

@ barbrail: I totally agree with you. The state govt and the juvenile justice system have taken over how people raise their kids, then when the kids committ a crime, they blaim the parents. There is a very serious problem with the juvenile system here. None of the kids are held accountable for the crimes they commit. Authorities always come up with some excuse for bad behavior. The majority of these kids have good parents, they just know the system.

How come if the Taliban set

How come if the Taliban set up shop in Augusta that the local, state and federal government would use any and all means to stop these terrorists...yet we treat gangs like Boy-Scouts-Gone-Bad?!? Folks, these animals are terrorists; they create terror in our society. Treat them as enemy combatants. Eliminate them. They are absolutely useless to society. And, you know when they target the terrorists, they must also target their families because that is the source of their training and terror. I have no sympathy for this type of pond scum.
