Deputies are trying to identify a man who’s swindled two people into giving him cash to buy TVs at Sears at the Augusta Mall.
The thief, who was identified only by his nickname “Man,” tells the victims he can get expensive TVs at cheap prices from the store, according to Richmond County Sheriff’s Investigator Aaron Hannsz. When they hand over the cash, the thief pretends to purchase the TVs then leaves the store.
“His whole pretense is getting TVs and electronics at a really discounted rate,” Investigator Hannsz said.
The first incident authorities identified happened on Jan. 17 and the most recent occurred exactly one month later. One of the victims told investigators he watched as “Man” shook hands with a sales associate at Sears who said he said would be giving them the discount. Later, after the thief had taken his $800 and fled, the victim confronted the employee. According to a sheriff’s report, the employee said he didn’t know the man and that “the subject just walked up to him and shook his hand.”
Investigator Hannsz said a man matching the description of the thief was seen at the store on Feb. 20 but he ran from the mall after authorities attempted to stop him. In mall surveillance video, the theft suspect is wearing a brown jacket in the first incident and a gray jacket with a white T-shirt in the second incident.

Scam? This man is running a legitimate business. Anyone who is stupid enough to give a complete stranger $800 cash to get a "discounted" TV deserves to be taught a life lesson that they will never forget. Sounds like he's in the business of education.
i agree wholeheartedly..if you are so blind as to believe that this guy was legit, you deserve to lose that money. and not even a name, just a nickname??? here "man", take my money and buy me a "discount" tv..and from sears of all places..sears doesn't discount anything !!!!
Maybe he is out delivering the TV? Lets not rush to judgment. By the way, I can get a discount on a home theater system to go with those TVs. :)
Never overestimate the greed and ignorance of the American public. And if this isn't a lesson to every person out there trying to "get one over on an honest business", shame on you!
I agree, who the hell would give a stranger money for a discount (especially a stranger who wasnt' working behind the counter). The part about him just walking up to the store associate and shaking his hand is really funny. That was a smart part on the thief.
It's those rascally republicans who made this victim resort to crime.
Isn't it always "the Man" trying to take our money? Only it makes much more sense now ...
Like I said " Trash like this is a dime a dozen. Buyer beware!"
