According to Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen, 16-year-old Tykiah Palmer, of the 2100 block of Trotters Way, was pronounced dead at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. The fatal shooting occurred at about 6 p.m. Wednesday on the 2100 block of Ramblewood Drive. Palmer had been shot one time in the chest, Bowen said.

Palmer, who was between six and seven months pregnant, was taken to the Medical College of Georgia in critical condition and died in the operating room, Bowen said. Doctors performed an emergency caesarian and were able to save her baby for a short time, but the baby was later pronounced dead at 7:47 p.m.

The bodies of both Palmer and her baby will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Augusta for an autopsy on Thursday, Bowen said.

Authorities were looking for 15-year-old Loviet Nushawn Edwards in connection with the fatal shooting, according to Richmond County sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles. Edwards turned himself in to authorities at the Law Enforcement Center late Wednesday night.

Investigators have learned that Edwards and the victim had been involved in a verbal altercation in the road near the front of Edwards' home. Edwards pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at the victim, striking her at least once.

The shooting is still under investigation. Investigators do not believe that Edwards and the victim have ever been in a romantic relationship together. There is no indication that the shooting was gang-related, Peebles said.

Edwards will be charged as an adult with two counts of Murder and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, Peebles said.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at (706) 821-1080.

mosovich, People like you are the reasons why situations like this seem so tense. Hateful people like you are the reasons why we have crimes as such going on. If only people like you think before you speak, you'd be surprised to see change.

Smitha- Perhaps it is not

Smitha- Perhaps it is not that our wonderful lives are untouched but more that we have seen and experienced far too much of the problems. Not the problems of mortal man as you claim, rather the problems created by society that wants to give everyone a second chance regardless of the offense, a society that would rather hide it's head in the sand than correct the problem. The constant whining from certain fragments of that society that the actions needed to correct the problem are unfair, discriminatory, racist, profiling, cruel and unusual etc, etc. The failure of our elected leaders to make any substantive change because by doing something they fear alienating a part of the voter base thereby becoming un-elected. Perhaps it is the "I'm gonna get mine" attitute exhibited from this young thug all the way up to the pinnacles of power that have made people digusted with the decay in this country. If people sound harsh, perhaps they have seen more than you, not less.

Wonder what The Boy Wonder,

Wonder what The Boy Wonder, Deke Copenhaver has to say about this? Oh that's right if we just build his ball park.. all will be well in Augusta and the crime will dissappear. Violent crime is the #1 issue facing this city and Deke the Meek is completely oblivious to it. When a group of concerned citizens wanted to form a task force back last fall to study enancting a Chronic Nuisance Property Ordinance to attack crime at its roots.. thye Boy Wonder twiddled his thumbs and punted it over to Chiquita Banana.. when he had every power as Mayor to form the taskforce.Boy Wonder is running for re-election, let's pray a real leader steps forward.

No in my 60 odd years I have

No in my 60 odd years I have seen a great deal perhaps that in itself cautions me in the way I perceive others. I have found that the convictions we hold today may crumble tomorrow. There is great sorrow in this, if harsh words could ensure that it would never happen again then mine would be the harshest but it won't so I try to simply understand the failings of men.

There is no social ill that

There is no social ill that cannot be solved with the correct level of direct discipline. If society doesn't discipline its criminals, then the criminals will discipline our society. Now can you all see why I scream that the idiots on the DDA get to keep their $200,000 a year while the Sheriff is cut by $1,000,000? How can we justify cutting the Sheriff when we are in bad economic times, which fosters an 'up-tick' in crime in itself, and in the middle of an obvious violent crime spike? Priorities are easy to spot, it is where your money is spent. Where does the commission spend its money? OH RIGHT! On $500,000 'studies' to create 'Master Plans' and $100,000,000 on TEE centers, and $60,000 on clocks on Broad Street, and $40,000 on Trolley studies, and $60,000 on parking studies, and $50,000 on private sidewalks for government officials, and $150,000 on a two block 'Street Scape' project, and how about all the boards and authorities that get MILLIONS in our tax dollars without producing results? I agree that Deke has not really said much, but then again, he probably sees this as a law enforcement problem, not a 'city' governemnt problem. Plus, it will not look good to some groups he needs to get reelected if he starts talking about crime when all he seems to be able to do is 'promote' how AWESOME! Augusta is! Why just read Forbes magazine and you can see how great we are! Nevermond the ACTUAL crime and poverty in our city.

Tear down the public housing

Tear down the public housing AND eliminate Section 8 vouchers. When people HAVE TO WORK they don't have time to commit crimes. It's called tough love and it works every time. It will take a generation to make the change, but it will work. The black community didn't deteriorate overnight and it will take time to bring it back, but throwing away money just to buy votes (Democrats) won't work.

All I can say is" thank

All I can say is" thank goodness the sheriff declared that we don't have a gang problem in Augusta". Man with information that kids are running around with guns could give people the wrong impression. I wonder if there are any reporters in the AC who could do a piece on the section 8 feeders since the city decided to farm them all out into the county? Maybe a story about what rules these animals have to abide by when the live in civilization would be good also. Although I doubt there are rules, because we wouldn't want to hurt their feelings.

This is a prime example of

This is a prime example of what 50 years of the "GREAT SOCIETY" has brought us to. If we started today, it would takes us at least that long to rid ourselves of the scourge the entitlement programs have brought on this country. When the Bible talks about God sending scourges upon the land, it doesn't have to be just pestilence and disease!

out woll trot some "scumbag"

out woll trot some "scumbag" lawyer and plead his client "not guilty" and make every effort to suppress the evidence, not that this will be a case of mistaken identity or that this piece of crap is innocent that the evidence will show that he didn't do it. true justice is when his lawyer pleads him guilty because the evidence sez so, and throws his client on the mercy of the court, no need to waste valuable time and taxpayers dollars on this case based on what is printed and that HE TURNED HIMSELF IN...he's guilty so what is the need for a lawyer??? i do see very many innocent people going down to the law enfocement center and turning themselves in for crimes they didn't commit..prior felony?!?!?!? he should have been put away for a very long time when he committed his first crime...but i guess out will trot a psychologist claiming emotional abuse, neglect, feelings of inferiority, was picked on in school, can't read because he is black, slavery, oppression, racism..i think i covered all of the excuses that will be used by his "scumbag" lawyer..maybe the hawk brothers will represent him, they seem to like representing "butchers"

Interesting all the shouts of

Interesting all the shouts of "Murderer!" "Killed two innocent people!" "Murdered an unborn child!", etc.

Article reads, "...charged as an adult with two counts of Murder..."

So why, when Mr. Edwards made the conscious decision to shoot this obviously-pregnant girl, do we call it "two counts of murder"? When, if Ms. Palmer or any other expectant woman (I refuse to use the term 'mother' in this scenario) decides to end the child's life with an abortion, we call it a "choice" and there are no criminal consequences? Regardless of your stance on the issue of abortion, you've got to see the flaw in that logic. Same end result with two different sets of consequences. That just doesn't add up.

Why is it that the family is

Why is it that the family is always attacked when a young person commits a crime. You don't know anything about that young mans family. What you can reasonably assume is that there are two families going through pure he__ this morning. All your other nasty, hateful and idiotic assumptions speak as to the people you are.

This incident and those like

This incident and those like it that happen daily, hourly will not go away. No matter how many are arrested or incarcerated, there will always be another one stepping in it's place. If this same level of crime were to happen in a white section of a county, how long would it be before the citizens of that location would take action to eliminate the problem (one way or another). Leave them alone and one of two things will happen. Citizens of that society will take it upon themselves and turn against those that are daily given them a bad name (or) when left alone will "Self-Destruct". This society needs to support the law enforcement a lot more than they are doing today instead of supporting the one's that are killing them and preventing them from living an acceptable decent life. Their level of thinking has the same impact on their living conditions as the government providing subsidies to prevent a them from working for a living. There are more decent, intelligent humans in that society that could solve the problem than there are criminals. "It is only them and them alone that can do it".
