Judge sentences kidnapper to life plus five years

  • Follow Crime & courts

Victor Scott showed little reaction Thursday when he learned he would spend most of the rest of his life in prison.

The man convicted of beating, then kidnapping 38-year-old Corwin Lee from the Augusta Super Inn two years ago glanced back several times at a young woman crying in the courtroom before a bailiff led him away.

A jury deliberated just under two hours -- with an overnight break in between -- before returning a guilty verdict for Scott on charges of kidnapping with bodily injury and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Richmond County Chief Superior Court Judge Carlisle Overstreet sentenced Scott to the mandatory sentence -- life, plus five years for the gun charge.

Scott is one of two men to be tried for Lee's kidnapping in Georgia, and he will now face a murder trial for Lee's death in South Carolina.

According to police, the crime took place after a night of partying on Dec. 23, 2007. They said Lee was beaten and stuffed into the trunk of a car by Scott after a drug deal went bad. Lee's burned body was found a few days later in a wooded area near the Fifth Street Bridge in North Augusta.

Assistant District Attorney Philip Catalano said the citizens of Augusta could be proud of the jury for returning a guilty verdict, although he believed true justice would have been somewhat harsher.

Scott's co-defendant, Javell Gordon, testified during the trial and was expected to take a plea deal of 20 years in jail and 10 years probation. He backed out of that arrangement, however, and will go on trial next month on kidnapping and gun charges.

What is the racial makeup of that jury that ol' Adam thinks the people should be so proud? Once known, that info may in fact make SOME people proud, but others will be reminded of a past era.... nothing to be proud of here unless U R Iran or China who watches are this nation rots.

What does the racial makeup

What does the racial makeup of the jury have to do with it? Do you believe he was railroaded?

That makeup was 7 blacks and

That makeup was 7 blacks and 5 whites if you need a count. Also, it isn't Adam that thinks people should be proud, it was the Assistant District Attorney. Read more carefully.

The jury was majority black

The jury was majority black (I saw the selection process). I'm curious as to why justus would think that that matters, though...would it be appropriate to ask about the racial makeup of a jury that found a white defendant guilty?

Change, According to "some",

Change, According to "some", every black who is convicted of a crime is innocent and they are falsely convicted by all-white juries-which no longer exist in Augusta, and haven't for years- but that doesn't matter. RC is majority black, and the jury pool is pulled from registered voters. Now, the fact that whites are more likely to register and vote doesn't seem to matter to "some"; it's about racial hatred for whites, not facts.
