31 inmates take part in Richmond County jail fight

  • Follow Crime & courts

A fight broke out at the Richmond County jail on Friday night after three deputy jailers confronted a group of inmates they caught gambling.

Thirty-one inmates were involved in the altercation about 7:30 p.m., and at least three deputies were taken to the hospital with injuries, though none were life-threatening, Sheriff Ronnie Strength said.

One deputy jailer had a broken nose, another had a broken rib or rib injuries and a third was stabbed in the face with a pencil.

"(The deputies) went in there to stop the gambling, and the inmates got mad and started fighting the officers," the sheriff said.

Additional officers from the uniformed force and special operations were called in to help, he said.

Half of the sixth floor, where the fight occurred, was on lockdown Friday night, Strength said. That means the prisoners remained locked in their cells with no visitors allowed and no privileges.

Charges against the inmates are pending a discussion with the district attorney, but Strength said he expected those charges to at least include felony obstruction of law enforcement officers.

He said it's hard to say what could have prevented the fight.

"These things happen," he said. "You're dealing with a criminal element, and they do not care."

If you are in jail, why not

If you are in jail, why not lock 'em in the cells and leave 'em. No problems that way. Besides, as far as I am concerned when you are locked up you don't deserve people comforts. 3 hots and a cot is all it takes to live. Maybe if jails weren't a country club people would try harder to stay on the outside.

You load 16 tons, what do you get another day older and a deeper in debt;
Well, St. Peter, don't you call me, cause I can't go;
I owe my soul to the company store.

Require the inmates to do manual labor for 8 hours a day and they won't have the energy to fight. Hire them out to work. Require them to take part in a daily excercise program. (some of the cops I see around could use it also). Keep them busy.

How is this that 31 inmates

How is this that 31 inmates could be socializing and gambling inside of a jail? Are they in the jail to socialize or be locked up for socializing with the wrong crowds? Sounds like there is to much freedom inside of a place where their freedoms are supposed to be restricted as punishment for a crime.

31 involved and only three

31 involved and only three Deputies are injured! Sounds like we have some Reeeeeeal PUNKS as so-called 'criminals' in our jails. Let 31 inmates jump on three in Atlanta and see what happens.I think we should use leather strap floggings like here in Afrika or the cane like in Singapore. If we do not discipline criminals in our society, then the criminals will discipline our society. Lock them all down and take away their sleeping mats. Here in Sierra Leone, you get NOTHING if you go to jail. No cot, no window, no T.V., no bathroom (unless you count a bucket in the worse part of the holding cells), and mealie meal for food. If you want real food and clean water, it must be brought to you by your family. There is crime here, but it is all petty and NO ONE ever wants to be arrested because they know the conditions inside. No County Club cells here, just harsh conditions and even harsher treatment. Shoot, let some convicts here jump on the prison officers, there would be a full-on set of complete beat-downs issued to all involved by the menaest guards you ever saw in your life. I don't agree with police brutality, but when jailed criminals use violence, you really have no choice do you? WHUP EM' Ronnie!!

I agree with OLDENOUGH. Put these dirtbags on chaingangs and make them clear weeds, pick up litter, and dig ditches by roadsides for a day and they won't feel like gambling and fighting with deputies. Why do we pamper these dirtbags? The taxpayers are tired of the jail system being run by the American Criminal, I mean, Civil Liberties Union.

Yea Brad, spoken without PC.

Yea Brad, spoken without PC. When the majority of this country starts speaking without PC and use nothing but common sense and Facts, then and only then will we be able to correct all the damaging issues that we face daily. Government, Crime, Education, Slums, Racial Problems, Wars, Economy (Our Freedom).

We need a new jail with one

We need a new jail with one prisoner per cell with an exercise yard for 1 hour of exercise per day. Other than that their behinds are in a cell 23 hours out of the day unless they are on work detail. They are not on vacation or at a social club, they're in jail. No perks, no fun, no group gatherings. I hope the officers got to knock out a few loser's teeth.

It sounds kind of cool to

It sounds kind of cool to tell everyone what we would do, but real life is a bit more...uh, real. There are all varieties in jail and it's hard to tell who is involved in a riot and who isn't. Some people in the jail, may be in for minor offenses, keep in mind. Some may be even be innocent. Many years ago in Charleston, I was arrested in a club that was raided due to illegal gambling. Heck, I was betting a dollar on blackjack. It was a hellacious night in jail. Some of those guys were in for hard crimes including one for murder that I had read about. On the other hand, a few guys were in for very minor offenses. I was fined $10 in magistrate's court. Everyone in jail doesn't deserve a caning.

Umm.. who was supposed to

Umm.. who was supposed to watching the inmates to begin with. How did such a large crowd get to gather together long enough to start gambling in the first place. No wonder they got mad. Wrong or not some had to have been down some cash (cigs or something). Kind of like putting a bowl of food in the middle of a pack of dogs, then trying to take it. I'm usually on the cop's side, but someone dropped the ball on this one. We need to bring back hard labor.

Brad, my wife lived in

Brad, my wife lived in Singapore for a couple years and she said people were respectful and feared the law. That made it such a pleasant and safe place to live. I've been saying all the time that other countries may be sick and cruel at times, but give them an a+ for the punishment inflicted on those who deserve it. We don't even need to lock someone up if we give them 90 lashings with a cane. I don't think they'd want to commit crime again.

Bring back the blackjacks and

Bring back the blackjacks and the billy-clubs and crack a few skulls of these maggot cretins. The earlier post was right, treat them like Sheriff Arpaio treats his prisoners. Jail is a bad place, and the inmates need to learn that.

RK, change that to 1 hot, 1 cold and a cot. These "so called" citizens derserve no more! Put them to work on the streets and claning public areas and facilities for 12 hrs a day. Might lessen the desire to return!

The Riverman is correct on

The Riverman is correct on this one. Every local jail has a mixture of prisoners; some are awaiting trial --there because they cannot for whatever reason post bail-- which in the land of speedy justice (guaranteed by the that defunct document: the Constitution) can mean literally years; some who cannot pay fines imposed by the court, some who are simply the criminal scum of the earth. All thrown together with no regard for the differences. We could segregate them of course, but that would take an investment of time and money and manpower, all of which are in critically short supply, and, as shown by the posters to this board there is no public support to actually care. Until they themselves are exposed to the system.

Earlier in my life, I

Earlier in my life, I experienced both jail and prison. I was one of the fortunate ones that got to 'open up' Walton Way. 4th St was a hell hole let me tell you. It's no country club at Walton Way. Inmates are allowed out of their cells daily, but locked up nightly. You get one person that is mad at the world and it could very easily turn into a riot. All the sheriff does is hold the incarcerated until they are moved to a prison or released. Now when you get to prison, they make you work unless you are on death row. At G.D.C.C., I was on a crew that toted cinder blocks to laborers. At Rogers C.I., I was placed on a dairy farm to labor. This notion that prison or jail is cakewalk is absurd. Not everyone gets treated like Walker, Williams, Shrenko. You get crap to eat, you have to sleep on the floor, and God help you if you show that you are weak....

The ones who speak in such harsh terms have no knowledge of what is reality but have no problem giving the world thier expert input. There is no one thing that fits all and remember there is three sides to all stories .

Yep, Fishman knows what I'm

Yep, Fishman knows what I'm talking about. The bullpen in the jail I was in had the open area where everyone was let out of the small cells in the daytime. The open area was about the size of a large living room and crowded. The tough guys would walk back and forth for exercise and the crowd would move out of the way every few seconds as they came by. It looked like the Red Sea parting. I mean there are a lot of ways decent folks can end up in jail for a few days. Something like what happened to me with the club being raided, drinking too much, maybe you accidentally wrote a check you couldn't cover. What about the 70 year old woman who had just come from the bank where she got cash and at the store it was discovered she had counterfeit bills? Things like that come to mind. As said above, all types are in jail. It has to be a humane situation.

IMO, there is no fear left in

IMO, there is no fear left in the world. Religion use to keep folks at bay because no one wanted Hades. That is no longer effective. There has to be something to cause fear in an individual or else they will do what they want to no consequence. Jail is no cakewalk, but life on the streets is worse sometimes.

Evertbody posting here voted

Evertbody posting here voted for a new jail to be paid by SPLOST funds. And you knew the new jail would be built on the most expensive property available. And you knew the new facility would be a marble palace, and still you complain. I have always said put these people at the county line out in the country in Army tents and triple barbed wire. If they want visitors make it under a tree. I am sure if life wasn't so good, many would not like a repeat. Further, the Judges are the ones demanding the way prisoners are treated, and judges come from Lawyers and Lawyers are you folks favorite people to elect to the legislature. So in conclusion who is responsible for setting up these marble palaces?

I have mixed feelings on this

I have mixed feelings on this one. A few years ago, I was on jury duty. There were 2 men being tried. The one that was found innocent sat in jail for 9 months because his family couldn't afford to pay bail while the drug dealer was bailed out and his pregnant "baby mama" was sitting in the court room. Sometimes life just isn't fair.
